Did The Orioles Let You In On The Secret? Probably Not …..

January 21, 2010 |

Well, we’re just two days away from the Orioles WINTER CELEBRATION for fans. Yet, I’ll guarantee someone will read this blog with that “caveman who sees fire for the first time” look …..
.

.
Let this be your official notification …..

The Baltimore Orioles are hosting their FanFest, this Saturday, January 23rd, from 11am til 6pm, at the Baltimore Convention Center. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids.

There ya go, Pete, I just did it for you.

Where did I get my initial information? I went to ORIOLES.com, last weekend, to have a gander at the spring training facility, in Sarasota. And, BAM !!!! There it was ….. “Orioles FanFest 2010″ – the 6th ranked/rotating story on the team’s homepage.

I went to the website, TODAY, and it’s still #6 !!!!
.

.
Indeed, if you wanna see the above logo, it’s located behind …..

1) Interesting Names Among O’s Non-Roster Invites

2) Orioles Single Game Tickets On Sale Saturday

3) Baseball Pitching In To Help Devastated Haiti

4) O’s Come To Terms With Scott, Work With Guthrie

5) It’s A New Era In Spring Training Baseball Caps

Ya got that? Do you see where the Orioles priorities are on this day – EXACTLY ONE MONTH before Spring Training begins?
.

MARKETING THIS …..
.

.
IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN KEEPING THIS …..
.

.

It gets better – you know what the top HEADLINE is on Orioles.com ??? You guessed it ….. “Moeller Among O’s Non-Roster Invites.”

Man, I feel alot better now. Chad Moeller is coming to camp and he’s wearing jersey #79. Clear your late-October schedule, the birds might be playin’ ball in the autumn chill.

Have you considered Chad Moeller’s chances of playing baseball, in October? I envision two scenarios …..

A) He joins the Red Sox, in August, and Victor Martinez, as well as Jason Varitek, Dusty Brown, Mark Wagner and Carl Yastrzemski suffer season-ending injuries …..

OR

B) He signs with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters …..

The Orioles have a prime opportunity to convene with a starved fan base, on a weekend that finds Baltimore focused on little else. People are looking for something to do and weekends are usually devoted to the FAMILY function.

Any sports loving dad would love to take his kid downtown to get a photo with today’s Orioles stars, along with yester year’s heroes and tomorrow’s prospects. But, families need to plan schedules, right?

What time is this guy appearing?
.

.
How about this guy?
.

.
And, this one?
.

.
I have little doubt Brian Roberts, Nick Markakis and Adam Jones will appear at Saturday’s event. They’re good guys. But, if you wanna be sure – SHOW UP – and the Orioles will let you know one hour prior to the player’s scheduled appearance.
.
Where is the confirmation? Where is the promise? Where is the guarantee?

Heck, WHERE IS THE PROMOTION?

We all watch endless hours of MASN, right? Have you seen B-Rob, Nicky or Jonesie in a quick commercial promoting the event? How about Andy MacPhail – can he promote it?

Speaking of the President of Baseball Operations …..

On Saturday, you’ll get a special forum with Andy, as well as manager, Dave Trembley, during the team’s official “State Of The Orioles” address. The only catch is YOU MUST BE A SEASON TICKET HOLDER.

You got that? If you’re a hard working dude, who goes to a dozen games, per season, you can’t attend the team’s formal disclosure. Remember Sam Mayfield? He’s the guy who caught Matt Wieters first homerun, last July. Guys like him are NOT INVITED. Nice …..

Still, on Saturday, a panel similar to this will exist for some Orioles fans …..
.

.
What’s missing? Better yet, WHO is missing?

Well, to answer that question, I’ll simply show an example of how Baltimore’s OTHER TEAM – you know, the team that actually wins and goes to the playoffs – handles it’s “State Of The Franchise” address.

Sometime, very soon, a cleansing and transparent moment will take place, in Owings Mills. It does every year. And, you know what it is …..

That’s right, we’re awaiting the eagerly anticipated “STATE OF THE RAVENS” address. We know what that picture looks like, don’t we? It will be something similar to this …..
.

.
It’s not hard to figure out the distinguishing difference, is it? For whatever reason, Peter Angelos doesn’t feel an obligation to provide any answers regarding the Orioles impending future – to fans, or anyone else.

In fairness, when the Ravens conduct their annual meeting with ownership/management, it’s attended by media, not fans. But, the questions are still asked and Mr. Biscotti has no escape, of sorts.

Mr. Angelos continues to maintain a very reclusive profile. It’s a decision many don’t support. Still, it’s ultimately his decision. Speaking of which – SOMEBODY made the decision not to promote FanFest in a very visible manner.

Some consistencies never change, huh?
