First Young Bird Pitcher Takes Flight

April 21, 2009 | Rick Moore

10:34  No matter who wins tonight, consider it a big success. The first of the Orioles young pitching phenoms on whose arms the franchise will ultimately sink or swim passed his opening test. Brad Bergesen pitched superbly, allowing only one earned run and one walk in 5 2/3 innings, and left the game with a 4-3 win. The 21-year old kept a potent White Sox lineup off balance. He showed a lot of poise. We can’ t get our hopes up too much after just one start, but the young lad showed me a lot tonight. Let’s bring up a couple more of these top prospects soon and see what they can do.

I am very glad the O’s finally did the right thing when they signed Nick Markakis to a 6 year deal in January. As he goes 4-for-4 so far tonight, he is just a pure hitter, reminding me a little of George Brett with a little more power. His glove is sure to be “golden” very soon. He threw out a runner at third tonight. What else can you say? It is nice knowing he is going to be an Oriole for the foreseeable future.  Now let’s get Brian Roberts signed!

11:03 Birds have piled on a bit, and now lead 8-3 in the 8th. Looks like Bergesen will get his first major league victory. Good for him!
