Free the Birds and Nestor

August 09, 2007 |

So…I was at the studios of WNST yesterday and had a brief conversation with Nestor and it got me thinking of a blog….so I will now ramble for a bit about what I took away from my 2 minute interaction…some will say I am buttering the owner up after reading…nothing could be further from the truth. I have now been allowed into the inner circle of WNST for the past few months and I first want to say thanks to everyone at WNST. Whether or not you like their shows or agree with their views or hate how they do things or whatever your view is, one thing you can never and I mean never question is their passion for Baltimore sports and their desire to be a forum for the fans. Every single person I have met has a passion for Baltimore sports. They are without a doubt a terrific group of people. Their passion runs so deep that it truly hurts them to do some of things they do and don’t do. This brings me to my blog purpose tonight.

Free the Birds…if not WNST then who would have led this charge? No one that is who! No one had the guts or the forum to do and say what I will guess most of the Orioles fans think about our beloved O’s. I am as guilty as anyone for my apathy towards Free the Birds 2. As I said to Nestor today, if you have it I would support it, but I don’t know if I care enough to do it again. August 15th for me is do or die day for the O’s anyway. If they do not sign Matt Wieters, I am done…I will need to find another team or sport to care about during the baseball season.

Now I know many people think Free the Birds is a publicity stunt or a way for Nestor to grandstand. Folks he cares more then his books or words can tell you. He wants so bad to be back at Memorial Stadium watching a game that matters in September that it hurts him to think about it. Thanks god we got the Ravens because I have no idea what Nestor would do without them….and for that matter…what would we all be doing? It has been 10 years…10 years since this team played a meaningful game….I know this has all been said before, but how did this happen?

Do you all remember how happy we all were when Mr. Angelos bought the team? I do…it was Christmas the O’s would be here forever. Local ownership, grew up here, understands us,

WE INTERUPT THIS BLOG TO BRING YOU A 5 HOUR POWER OUTAGE…BOY AM I GLAD I PAY DOUBLE TO BGE THESE DAYS…NOTHING LIKE AN OUTAGE WHEN ITS 100 DEGREES>>>>now back to the blog if I can regain my thoughts…

wants to win, will spend money…and so on…

Well, in 1996 a funny thing happened…the O’s GM, wanted to trade David Wells and Bobby Bonilla for some top prospects. At the time the O’s were not playing great and the GM was looking to the future…made sense to me. BUT our new owner said NO…it would be a disservice to the fans who paid good money to see the team play…he thought they would turn it around. Then the worse thing ever happened…the team got hot…red hot and made the playoffs…then went wire to wire in 1997 (although Wells and Bonilla left for free agency) and the new owner thought he knew baseball. Now 10 years later we have had countless managers, GM’s and baseball people come and go and we are stuck in a losing era we thought we’d never see in Baltimore.

Which is why when you talk to Nestor you can see the love and hurt in his eyes. You hear him tell you the reason WNST exists is because of the Baltimore Orioles, the reason Bob Haynie, Drew Forrester , Rob Long and Michael Popovec can be heard every day and the reason Casey gives the best Ravens updates and Ray gets the best guests and shares his unique  outlook on sports, is because of his love for sports which began with the Orioles. So agree with how he does things or not, like him or loathe him, but when you listen to WNST remember why its hear and respect why he has done the things he has and that he was the only one to step forward and say enough is enough, I want my team back.

So, I say Nestor keeps fighting…stay the voice of so many that no longer have the energy or concern to fight anymore…keep pushing so we all can have what we desire to have back…that Baltimore way. So next time Nestor is on the air or you see him at an event…just say “Thanks”.

I will close with a song…that reminds me of the entire Free the Birds situation…

Forgive, sounds good.
Forget, I’m not sure I could.
They say time heals everything,
But I’m still waiting

I’m through, with doubt,
There’s nothing left for me to figure out,
I’ve paid a price, and i’ll keep paying

I’m not ready to make nice,
I’m not ready to back down,
I’m still mad as hell
And I don’t have time
To go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is
You think I should

I know you said
Why can’t you just get over it,
It turned my whole world around
and i kind of like it

I made by bed, and I sleep like a baby,
With no regrets and I don’t mind saying,
It’s a sad sad story
That a mother will teach her daughter
that she ought to hate a perfect stranger.
And how in the world
Can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they’d write me a letter
Saying that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I’m not ready to make nice,
I’m not ready to back down,
I’m still mad as hell
And I don’t have time
To go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is
You think I should

I’m not ready to make nice,
I’m not ready to back down,
I’m still mad as hell
And I don’t have time
To go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is
You think I should

Forgive, sounds good.
Forget, I’m not sure I could.
They say time heals everything,
But I’m still waiting

I think that would sum it up for me…FREE THE BIRDS…even if we take a year off….
