From training camp: Morning wrap up

August 17, 2007 |

Injury update: Antwan Barnes(ankle),Dan Wilcox(ankle),P.J. Daniels(hamstring),Chris Chester (ankle), and Steve Edwards(knee).

Now you can add Derrick Mason to that list, as he did not practice today or come to the field today and according to Brian Billick has a issue with his shoulder.

Play of the day: Ray Lewis picking off a Drew Olson pass and taking it in for a score.

Hit of the day: John Madden and his cruiser was the hit off the day as John was in town to get ready for the game that he will be calling on Sunday night.

Quote of the day: “Keep running Ray”, Ray’s defensive teammates after Ray picked off a pass and started running it back.

M.V.P. of the day: Demetrius Williams just continues to catch everything thrown around him, and will get a real chance to shine perhaps this Sunday night if Derrick Mason can not go.

One to watch: Dwan Edwards who has had a real solid training camp and is a very serviceable backup. Dwan will get a lot of snaps during the preseason and will be counted on throughout the season.

Upcoming :  The Ravens will be back at the field this afternoon for a specials team practice at 3 p.m. Then will hold a walk thru tomorrow to end training camp.

Injury update: Daniel Wilcox missed today’s practice with an ankle injury that he suffered on Wednesday morning. Dan is wearing a brace around his left ankle. Kelly Gregg missed another day with his right knee injury.
Dan Cody (knee), Mike Smith (shoulder), and Jonathan Ogden (toe) all continue to be on the p.u.p. list.

Play of the day: Today it has to go to Damien Linson(WR, Central Michigan), who took away an interception that CB Samari Rolle looked like he was certain to get.

Hit of the day: Yamon Figurs. No Yamon did not hit anyone, and technically he did not get hit by anyone. It was during wide receiver drills that Yamon was not aware that the ball was being thrown, and was hit right in the side of the helmet with the ball.

M.V.P. of the day: Demetrius Williams who had several big catches today, but then again that is almost is expected of him.

One to watch: Justin Bannan(DT). Justin will get the majority of the snaps this Monday night in the place of Kelly Gregg

Upcoming : The Ravens will return to the field this afternoon at 4 p.m. for a full team practice, as they continue to prepare for their preseason game Monday night against the Eagles.

Injury update: P.U.P : Dan Cody(who was walking with crutches), Jonathan Ogden, Mike Smith. Kelly Gregg missed another day of practice, but was outdoors doing more work then we have seen. Kelly is still wearing a brace on his right knee.

Ed Reed and Samari Rolle both were out of practice this morning. Coach Billick said Samari had something with his head after being run over by Mike Anderson yesterday; Reed was out with an ankle issue that Coach Billick said was not serious.

Daniel Wilcox went down with a left ankle injury early into the practice this morning. Dan walked off the field at about 9 a.m., and would not return for the remainder of practice. After practice Dan had his left ankle heavily taped.

Play of the day: On the first play of the 2 minute offense, Kyle Boller throws a strike down the sideline for a 40 yard completion. Unfortunately, it only ended up resulting in a field goal for the offense.

Hit of the day:  Quinn Sypniewski got absolutely lit up in a hit during team drills that was believed to be the result of Bart Scott. Quinn just went flying after the hit.

Quote of the day: “ A smart man will not make the same mistake twice.” Derrick Mason to Evan Oglesby this morning, referring to beating him yesterday during practice.

M.V.P. of the day: I am going to give it to Gregg Pruitt Jr., he had a couple of nice runs this morning.

One to watch: Gerome Sapp. Gerome has been very involved in the defense today filling in for Ed Reed. Gerome will be a key part of packages for this defense this year.

Upcoming : There will be no practice till Friday morning at 9:30. The Ravens are off the field this afternoon, then have a scheduled off day on Thursday.

Injury update: Kelly Gregg missed another day of practice, as he continues to nurse his sore right knee.

Dan Cody, Mike Smith, and Jonathan Ogden all remain on the p.u.p. list

Jamar Enzor (ILB, Cin) was out of practice this morning. Reason was unknown

Play of the day: Derrick Mason’s catch over Even Oglesby gets my vote. Not so much for the catch, although it was a nice one, but for the trash talking that started after it.

Hit of the day:  Mike Anderson’s running over Samari Rolle in the red zone. Anderson came right up the middle bounced off a guy, and then ran over Samari on his way to the end zone.  Samari was then hounded on my Derrick Mason, who asked Samari if he wanted some help.

Quote of the day: “I have already cashed it, and deposited it,” Derrick Mason to Dawan Landry after Mason began trash talking with him and Samari. Dawan had told Mason to make sure he was not writing a check his backside could not cash.

M.V.P. of the day: Derrick Mason, Derrick has looked very good during camp, and almost like he is out to prove something. The Ravens have done things with him like lining him up in the slot which creates a big mismatch.

One to watch:  LeRon McClain – LeRon continues to impress with his play. He absolutely explodes out of the backfield and hits whoever is in front of him.

Upcoming :  This afternoon’s special teams practice will be closed to the public, as Brian will move it in doors due to the heat. Wednesday afternoon’s practice will also be canceled, to give the players time off. There is no practice scheduled for Thursday, and Friday morning’s practice will have a time change, which has not been announced yet.

Brian Billick was not pleased with the effort from the offense during the morning practice, come off of a successful performance on Saturday during the scrimmage.

There was a brief scare this morning when Haloti Ngata rolled up on the leg of Steve McNair during the team drills. Steve would come back into play a play later, but Kyle Boller took the majority of the snaps during the final 10 minutes of practice. There is not much more that can be done to protect the players and especially the QB then what Brian Billick already does.

Kyle Boller made several nice throws again today including a strike down the middle of the field to Matt Willis who was covered by Ronnie Prude.

Kelly Gregg missed another day of practice, Kelly has been out for a week now. Clarence Moore returned to the field after not participating in the scrimmage on Saturday. Ben Grubbs and Antwan Barnes both returned to practice today, but were limited in their activities.

The Ravens will head back to the field for a 4 p.m. full team practice. The team will be off on Thursday, before returning to practice on Friday to continue to get ready for the Eagles.

To say that Jared Gaither has won players and coaches alike over, would be an understatement.

Jared will get to run with the 1st team offense, much like he has done for most of the week. He has impressed everyone with his play. Every defensive player that has went up against him, has talked about how good he is, and say the scary part is that he can only get better.

Expect to see Justin Bannan with the 1st team defense tomorrow in place of Kelly Gregg, who is still nursing a thigh bruise.

Coach Billick said that he is not expecting Ben Grubbs or Antwan Barnes to be playing on Saturday. Grubbs is still nursing a sprained right knee, while Barnes is still dealing with an ankle injury.

For tomorrow, Steve McNair and Kyle Boller will take the majority of the snaps for the team while they are doing the 7 on 7 drills versus the Redskins. The 1st teams will only take 10 plays each against the Redskins 1st team.

Off to hear the officials speak with the media, then the walkthrough for the team this afternoon.
