"The Orioles today announced the creation of an award to honor the team’s top fans, to be named after William "Wild Bill" Hagy, who passed away on Monday.
The award will expand the Orioles Hall of Fame ceremonies, which currently includes categories for both on-field and non-uniform members of the Orioles organization. Fans who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment in support of the team will be considered for the Wild Bill Hagy Award.
Appropriately, Hagy will be the first recipient of the award, which was announced during Orioles Hall of Fame ceremonies prior to tonight’s game. A lifelong Baltimorean and fan of the Orioles since 1954, Hagy was well known for leading "The Roar from 34" in his upper deck section at Memorial Stadium in the 1970s and ’80s, sometimes coming down to the top of the dugout to lead the crowd in cheers as he spelled out "O-R-I-O-L-E-S"."
I am shocked! Maybe this McPhail thing will work out…maybe Peter the Great finally remembers what it meant to be a Baltimore Orioles fan. Maybe his minority owners actually decided to step up and say something? No matter why and how…this is a CLASS ACT by the club and they are to be commended.
