Griffey naps, I yawn

May 11, 2010 |

So the big story today was that Ken Griffey Jr. was unavailable for pinch hitting duty over the weekend because he was napping in the clubhouse.  According to a report from the Tacoma News Tribune an unnamed Mariner said that Griffey was asleep in the clubhouse during a game an unable to pinch hit.  The story was all the rage for the ESPN talking heads, but in all honesty who cares?  I mean really.  Why didn’t the guy just wake him up?

A nudge on the should followed by, “Hey Griff, Skip wants you to hit”.

Wouldn’t that have been more productive than an anonymous quote to a beat reporter?

If anyone thinks Junior catching a few zzzzzz’s in a clubhouse recliner is a big deal I suggest you read “Ball Four” by Jim Bouton; or read up on Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb or Mickey Mantle or the Gashouse Gang.  Actually the best book would be “The Bad Guys Won” about the 1986 Mets.  It’s an incredibly entertaining story and believe me a 5th inning nap would’ve been the least of the Davey Johnson’s worries.
