Good afternoon, Baltimore!

April 09, 2009 | Luke Jones

As a long-time listener of WNST, I’m excited to contribute to the WNST family through the King (or Queen) of Baltimore Sportstalk competition!

In 20 minutes, Orioles fans will get their first 2009 look at Alfredo Simon as the third starter in the rotation.  Many of you may be thinking it’s his Oriole debut, but Simon made four appearances last September, including a start against Tampa Bay on Sept. 23 (what do you mean you weren’t watching the Orioles last September?).

Simon’s spring performance was one of the biggest surprises out of Ft. Lauderdale, but don’t expect him to emerge as another Jeremy Guthrie.

Not including a successful 2008 stint in the Mexican League, Simon failed to post a minor-league  ERA below 5.00 after 2004.

Simon previously spent time in the Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Texas organizations during his eight-year minor league career.

Orioles fans can hope Simon can channel the memory of 14-game winner Jose Mercedes in 2000, but it is highly unlikely.

We’ll see if he can continue his spring training success as the Orioles go for the sweep against the Bronx Bombers.
