In case you’ve been in a cave for the last two days, I’ll break the news to you:
The Ravens are giving away 71,000 purple towels on Sunday night when they host the Steelers.
They’re calling it a “Purple Out”. Yes, that’s a horrible name for the event they’re trying to produce, but what else are you going to call it? Right…there’s nothing else to call it. Hence, welcome to the “Purple Out”.
Over the last 48 hours, I’ve gathered a lot of feedback from fans who have seen the towels or at the very least, caught wind of the idea that they’re being distributed on Sunday night.
95% of the people I’ve talked to, listened to, read or engaged with all don’t like the idea of handing out towels on Sunday night when Pittsburgh comes to town.
Here’s the first piece of news I’ll deliver before giving you some logic on why it’s a BAD idea and, perhaps, a GOOD idea for the Ravens to do this on Sunday night.
Lots of you have asked me if there’s any chance the team might re-consider the towel give-away if enough fans make enough of a stink about their dislike for it.
Answer: No. Not a chance.
A Ravens executive told me earlier this morning it’s a done deal. The towels are here and they’re going to be distributed on Sunday night.
With that, I’d just suggest to everyone to forget about getting worked up about it and just focus your energies on getting ready for Sunday night.
But I know it doesn’t work that way.
This is a VERY touchy subject in Baltimore, this give-away of the purple towel that looks eerily similar to something the Steelers have made their benchmark for the last 30 years: yellow towels.
It’s touchy because we know – as fans – we’re going to be ridiculed by those nitwits 250 miles away. The Ravens, honestly – and rightfully – don’t really care that the ardent football fans of Pittsburgh are going to poke fun at the ardent football fans of Baltimore because of the copycat nature of having fans wave towels at the game.
That said, I just google searched: “copyright on towels being waved at sporting events” and I don’t see any mention or reference to the Steelers having a patent on the concept.
The Ravens have done this before. Sunday night won’t be the first time
