Humble Pie

November 17, 2008 |

First, let me start off by saying, I don’t like the New York Giants, from a fan’s aspect. I mean, I don’t root for them, or even cheer for any one player on their team. However, I do respect them as a great football team.

Over the past three weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of covering the NFL on the radio for Westwood One Radio. For two consecutive weeks, I had Giants games. I had the G-men versus the Cowboys, and the Jints versus the Eagles. This means, I saw them, up close and personal.

After those two games, I came away respecting them a lot more than before. This team is extremely focused on winning, and nothing else. They execute to perfection. Chris Snee, RIGHT NOW, might be the best guard in football.

During the week leading up to the Ravens/Giants game, I commented on how the Giants will run the ball against the Ravens. Now, I’ll admit, I didn’t know whether or not they’d be successful, but I knew they wouldn’t abandon the run at any time. It’s what the Giants do better than anyone else in the National Football League.

During the week, I heard comments like they play in the NFL’s JV conference, they haven’t played the Ravens’ defense, look what the Browns did to them, and so on and so on…

This is the NFL and there are no jv’s in this league. The Giants have run up and down the field versus anyone who’s lined up against them, and the Ravens are no exception. This was a complete victory by a team who I feel is the best team in the NFL.

This loss does not tell me anything about the Ravens, except that the Giants are clearly better than them. I’m not overly concerned about that. The Giants are better than everyone, right now. I’m not walking away from this game pushing the panic button. We lost to a team who is starting to hit their stride.

The Ravens and their fans need to realize no one’s afraid of the men in purple and black. Not Ray Lewis, Haloti Ngata, Terrell Suggs, Bart Scott or Rex Ryans schemes. Players in the NFL thrive on beating the best. The Giants are the best running team in the league and I’m sure they were licking their chops, waiting to play the Ravens and vice versa. These are professionals.

This game may have provided some humble pie for all of us. Nothing’s handed to you in the National Football League.
