I hear the boo birds

April 19, 2009 | Keith Melchior

Bruce Boudreau shockedeveryone by starting Varlamov over Theodore Beaver Cleaver in goal yesterday. Varlamov played well only giving up one goal, but Lundqvist played better in getting the shutout. Caps down 0-2 and on the road. Tall task ahead for the boys in red. They need to play better 5 on 5 hockey in order to get it done. When you look at it, the Caps are on a 3 game losing streak while the Rangers are on a 5 game win streak. WillBoudreau stick with the rookie Monday or switch back to Theodore, hoping the one game off will help him refocus?  I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Caps go out with a whimper in 4 or 5 games.

Well the boo birds are surfacing here in Baltimore. I heard them out in full force as soon as the O’s went down 6-0. A meltdown by Beckett helped them get back into the game but nonetheless, Adam Eaton couldn’t stop the Red Sox momentum which was started by Jeremy Guthrie, Danny Baez and Aubrey Huff on Friday night. Brian Bass atoned for his previous sins by holding the Sox scoreless for the rest of the game. Look at the bright side, at least Big Crapi hasn’t blasted HRs yet but they need to find a way to keep Youkilis off base. He is doing a nice job hitting in the 3rd spot and is making Red Sox fans forget all about Manny Ramirez.  Someone should tell him about that Brillo pad stuck on his chin. He looks a little like King Tut from the old Batman TV series.

And today Koji starts with the 2ndteam playing behind him. Maybe once he learns English, he should refuse to pitch in a day game following a night game. Trembley already conceded todays game by having Moeller, Freel and Andino in the lineup. Koji needs to throw a 5 hitter and allow 2 runs or less if he expects a win in Fenway. I doubt he’ll go 5 innings.

I think it’s time to send Felix Pie to the minors to allow him more playing time and to get his swing straightened out. It’s sad when a pinch hitter who can’t hit is sent up in the late innings with the game on the line and he looks overmatched.  I thought this guy was touted as a 5-tool player? And the Orioles were serious last season about trading Brian Roberts for this guy?

I played the game of Manfra in the 3rd last night and got totally drunk on shots after 4 batters when he went over the total rolled on the dice. He said Roberts’ name 19 times, Jones’ 15, Markakis 14, and Huff 13 in each of their at-bats.  He and Joe Angel blather on about everything but the game itself.  It’s almost to the point of annoyance to listen to Angel and Manfra call a game.  Those two clowns couldn’t fill Chuck Thompson and Bill O’Donnell’s  shoes on their best days as broadcasters.
