This morning I caught up with Baltimore Blast GM Kevin Healey at the DuBurns Arena. For 20 minutes we were able to talk about the Baltimore Blast; plus a few comments about the old days!! Having played for Kevin in the old days with Post 38, I couldn’t be happier that he is the GM of the Baltimore Blast. Kevin Healey is a very genuine person who has supported Baltimore area soccer for more years then you would probally believe.
My first question for Kevin was, “Being a product of Baltimore soccer, what is your opinion of Baltimore area soccer today?” He smiled and replied, “Thriving!! Baltimore area club teams are winning National Championships, players are being drafted and signed into the professional level and the level of play is outstanding!!” Next I asked him, “Having accomplished so much in soccer here in Baltimore; what is your proudest achievement?” Right away Kevin replied, “Being able to help the Baltimore Blast become the #1 francise in the MISL and winning 3 of the last 5 MISL Titles.”
The third question was “How do you feel the Baltimore Blast chances are this year in the MISL Playoffs?” He replied with a grin, “I have been saying since the beginning of the year that this team is good enough to win the title. This is one reason we have not attempted any trades to improve the team; this team is that good!!”
Changing the topic some what I asked kevin about the future of the league and the possiblities of more TV coverage for the Blast. “It is always a challenge to succeed in this league, but if you have a good product for the fans to watch they will come back.” was his answer. As for the TV question Kevin replied, ” We are always looking at that aspect for the organization. We would like to have more coverage, but we do have national coverage on some games and have had 4 games on TV this season.”
Attendance!! The Baltimore Blast average a good crowd of 7,000 per game. I asked Kevin, ” How are you trying to improve the fan attendance?” He replied, “7,000 people per game is nice, but we would like to be back to the sell out days of old. With more corporation and season tickets sales we hope to realize this goal in the future. If the people enjoy what they are seeing they will come back again to see the Blast play.”
My last question for Kevin was about the many different summer soccer camps in the area and how the Blast Soccer Camps manage to have so many kids each year. His answer was, “At our camps we have the Baltimore Blast players themself there to help teach and train the young players. This is their job and they enjoy teaching the Baltimore area youth the game of soccer.”
I had a great time sitting down with Kevin today and would like to thank him for taking the time to talk with me!! If you love the game of soccer then get out and support your local professional teams; the Baltimore Blast, Crystal Palace and DC United.
