I turned on the TV last night and Scott Garceau and Jamie Costello were live from Cooperstown. I started to get pumped up. They showed the Cal highlights and I smiled. They showed Cal at Memorial Stadium and my smile got even bigger.
Yes, there was a time when the Orioles were my life. That was my youth. I get to re-live that this weekend.
10 of us are jumping into a 15-passenger van at 1:30am Sunday morning. We will make the five and a half hour road trip and love every minute of it. The thought of a three-hour traffic jam and eighty thousand people jammed into a town of two thousand would normally make me frustrated. None of that matters this weekend.
I was lucky enough to see my favorite Oriole, Eddie Murray get inducted back in 2003. I watched Eddie at the podium and saw Willie Mays, Brooks Robinson, and all the legends sitting behind Eddie. It gave me goose bumps.
Now Cal gets his moment. A guy that represents everything that was right about the game. He played everyday, he was always prepared, he accomplished everything that there was to accomplish, and he did it the right way. The way his dad taught him.
With all that is wrong in sports today. This weekend is coming at just the right time. If you are reading this, you are an Orioles fan. If you have any possible way to get to Cooperstown Sunday, make it happen. You may never get to see one of your own inducted again.
Congratulations Cal Ripken!!!
