I know that when Michael J. Fox jumps in the Delorean with Doc Brown hanging from the clock tower, that he will get it up to 88 mph just as the necessary 1.21 gigawatts produced by the lightning bolt rush in to the flux capacitor, sending Marty McFly back to 1988. It’s a fact. It’s going to happen.
I also know that the Orioles are going to be fun to watch… until the All Star break. They will tease us until then, making us think “Hey, you never know.” But deep down, we know. We know because every year in recent memory, we go into the year with an offense that will compete every night and a pitching staff that will keep you in the game and give you a chance to win some (not most) nights. Insanity has been defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Someone in the Warehouse needs a straight jacket. The future looks bright, but it looked bright when we had Adam Loewen, Hayden Penn, John Maine and Matt Riley waiting as the heirs apparent to the starting rotation.
Let me be very clear. I am not pulling a Mike Preston and looking for any negative I can. I’ve watched every O’s game this year and will continue doing so. It seems to me that the O’s aren’t as far away as some may think. We just took 4 out of 6 from the mighty (and improved) Yankees, and the World Series participant Rays. Early or not, I like what I saw.
But something’s not right??? Oh yeah, the same thing that hasn’t been right for years…. no depth in the rotation. One more starter would give us a solid 3 and decent 4 with Hendrickson. This would give us the ability to ease one of the young bloods in as a 4th or 5th starter. But who is that #3??
Right now, the Delorean is sitting at the starting line and revved and ready to go. Someone is hanging from the wire trying to bring everything together at the last second before lightning strikes. Is that Doc Brown… No…. It’s PEDRO MARTINEZ. Sign him. He could be a great 1 year band aid, put some butts in the seat, and here is a novel idea… win games!! Not to mention what could be learned by some of the young guys. No one wants to admit, but the fact of the matter is we have one of the best lineups in the major leagues. Two more adequate starters and, “Hey, you never know”.
But I’ve seen this movie before, I just hope the ending is different, because as it stands now, the Delorean is going to coe off the starting line as if Jeff Gordon were the driver, hit 55 mph and the radiator is going to drop out of the bottom.
