Delaware beats Towson, 49-21

October 17, 2009 | Drew Forrester

6:26 pm — It’s all over from soggy Towson University, where the Tigers were clobbered today by the University of Delaware, 49-21.  The Blue Hens led 49-0 in the 4th quarter before Towson scored three TD’s to avoid the shutout and give a little life to an otherwise dull offensive afternoon.  Towson falls to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the CAA.

6:05 pm — Honestly…Ethan wanted to watch Thomas The Train, so that’s what I’m doing right now.  But I know it’s 49-7 in favor of Delaware midway through the 4th quarter.  And it’s still raining.  And cold.

5:15pm — That’s what I get for cutting out 30 seconds early to head home and take over babysitting duties.  Towson had the ball with less than a minute to go in the half, down 28-0.  I assumed that’s how the half would end.  Wrong.  Delaware picked off a pass and took it back 87 yards on the final play of the half.  It’s now 35-0.  I think this one is in the books, but I’ll keep an eye on it and report back with updates.

4:43pm — When did Joe Flacco re-sign with Delaware?  Their QB – Pat Devlin – just hurled a 44 yard TD pass to put the Blue Hens up 28-0 at the half.  I didn’t think Towson’s offense could be worse than the weather…but, so far, it has been.

4:24 pm — Another 2-yard run for Delaware as they now lead 21-0 at Johnny Unitas Stadium.  I realize it’s rainy and cold and nasty and all.  And I COMPLETELY understand that Delaware is much better than the Rhode Island team the Tigers beat up on last week.  But is THIS the best offense the Tigers can generate today?  So far, I think they’ve probably gained a total of about 50 yards or so on four series’.

4:07pm — A shanked 26-yard punt out of the Towson end zone contributed to the second score of the game for the Blue Hens as Delaware has just struck on a 26-yard TD pass to take a 14-0 lead.

4:03 pm — Delaware leads 7-0 after one quarter of play at Johnny Unitas Stadium.  That’s not the worst news for Rob Ambrose, though.  Freshman QB Peter Athens is out with a leg injury and his return is doubtful.  The Tigers defense is battling pretty well at this stage, but their offense will have to come through now as the Blue Hens have just downed a punt on the Towson 1 yard line to start the 2nd quarter.

3:49pm — Aided by two straight personal foul penalties on Towson’s defense to start the drive, Delaware drove 80 yards in 11 plays for the first score of the game, a 2 yard touchdown run.  7-0 Blue Hens.   Update:  It’s still raining.  And still cold.

3:38 pm — Nothing yet. Towson got the ball to start the game and moved it OK but were forced to punt from the UD 43 yard line.

There are actually more people here than I would have imagined.

Are these people nuts, sitting outside and watching football today?

Easy for me to say, of course.   I’m in indoors.

I might make “blogging history” today at Towson University.

I’m going to live-blog the first half from soggy Johnny Unitas Stadium.  Then, owing to a babysitter who has to leave at 5:30pm, I’ll live-blog the 2nd half from my home in elegant Parkville.

It will be dry in my house, at least.

The attendance at Towson is going to suffer greatly today, as they had a pre-sale of nearly 4,000 and were expecting a large contingent of UD fans to make the trek down I-95 from Newark.  In addition, it’s Homecoming at TU, and that always spikes the crowd for college football.

Instead, there might be 1,500 people here right now.  It looks a lot more like an Orioles mid-week game in September than a CAA college football crowd, that’s for sure.

I’ll be back with some in-game thoughts and updates as the play dictates.
