Manny Machado to be Activated

April 29, 2014 | Ethan Stewart

As reported by the WNST Text Service at 12:27 PM on April 29, 2014, the Orioles are planning on activating third baseman Manny Machado today, per FoxSports.

This is the day O’s fans have been patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for since the beginning of the 2014 season.  Machado’s bat in the lineup and glove in the field have been sorely missed by the Orioles and his presence is now even more important after considering the oblique injury that Chris Davis sustained a few days ago.  It’s incredibly exciting to see that 21-year-old phenom will be making his 2014 debut with the Orioles very shortly, most likely during the series with the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Half of the team’s errors thus far have been by fill in third basemen Jonathan Schoop and Ryan Flaherty so having a Gold Glove caliber fielder like Machado back out there on the hot corner should resolve some of the fielding woes that the Orioles have had this season.  In his last rehab game for Single-A Frederick, Machado went 4-4 with 2 RBI and a stolen base.

Personally, my only reservation concerning this whole Manny Machado situation is that I hope that this isn’t strictly a baseball move in that it was a necessity for Machado to come back this early.   Although his knee surgery was not of the most severe fashion, I still worry that this is a bit of a rush job as the organization is seeing inconsistent hitting out of the starting lineup as well as a Chris Davis DL stint and are pushing Machado back into action too quickly.  A reaggravation of the knee injury is the worst possible outcome of this and if he is indeed being rushed back, it would be incredibly reckless of the Orioles as an organization to do this.  However, the timetable we’ve consistently heard about stated that Machado could indeed be back by April. Therefore, I’ll defer to the Orioles doctors and hope that they are keeping in mind the best interests of Manny.

I sure do hope he’s physically and mentally ready to rejoin the ball club.  We need him back.  Badly.
