Urgency is on the Terps’ minds as they travel to Lawrence Joel Coliseum to take on Wake Forest (7-9, 0-1 ACC) at 8:00. Following a valiant effort in a 71-64 loss at No. 1 Duke on Sunday, Maryland finds itself in danger of starting 0-3 in the ACC.
The Demon Deacons, however, appear to be the perfect remedy as they’ve lost five of their last six under new head coach Jeff Bzdelik. Wake opened its conference schedule with a 90-69 loss at N.C. State on Saturday and has dropped games to nondescript schools Stetson, Winthrop, and Presbyterian this season — not exactly an imposing gauntlet.
The Terps have started 0-2 in conference play for just the eighth time in Gary Williams’ 22 seasons in College Park. The good news is four of those teams have rebounded to secure an NCAA tournament bid. Needless to say, there is plenty of season left when you consider how unimpressive the conference has looked beyond the top-ranked Blue Devils.
That said, Maryland finds itself in as close to a “must-win” situation as you’ll find this early in conference play. With the Demon Deacons considered by most to be the worst team in the ACC, a loss tonight would raise serious doubts about the current state of the Terps moving forward into the meat of the ACC schedule.
Tonight’s game will be televised on WNUV-TV in Baltimore at 8:00 p.m. with Mike Hogewood and Mike Gminski calling the action from Winston-Salem. As always, be sure to follow us on Twitter (@WNST) for in-game analysis and watch the game with us in the Turtle Power live chat right here at WNST.net!
