Matt Bassler wins MD Open at Hillendale CC

July 15, 2009 | Drew Forrester

The first time I saw Matt Bassler, he was 5 years old and putting on the practice green at Rolling Road.

We’re both a little older now, but he’s in his early 20’s.

And today, he won the Maryland Open at Hillendale CC.

Matt – an amateur – shot -3 for three rounds and ended the tournament with a birdie at the 18th hole after Brent Martin had closed to within a shot after he made birdie at #17 and Bassler made bogey.

I’m hoping to have Matt on the show tomorrow morning.

Great kid.  Great player.  Great win.

I’m sure somewhere in the great golf course in the sky, Bill Bassler Sr. is very proud today.  Billy Bassler Jr., the current Head Professional at Rolling Road is also beaming with pride right about now.

Congrats to Matt Bassler, the ’09 MD Open champion.
