MISL PREVIEW

January 24, 2008 |

The Baltimore Blast face their arch nemesis the Milwaukee Wave Friday at First Mariner. It is the first meeting since the season opener in which Baltimore scored a 13-8 win. My how things have changed since that game. The Wave are 11-5 and are 2ND in the MISL standings. The Blast are 8-7 and right now in 5th position in the table and have recovered slightly from the December swoon but still need to prove they can beat the big 3 of: Milwaukee, Chicago, and Detroit to show me they are back in it for the long haul. As usual Greg Howes leads the world in scoring with 69 points. Marcio Leite is 2nd in points for the Wave and they come to Baltimore with a healthy team sans the Dusosky brothers (Todd ankle out on IR and Troy doubtful knee) who both look out for this contest. Baltimore has a better Goals Against and they have been stingy at home. Sagu is 3rd in Points Against with an 8.54 avg. In contrast Baltimore has had trouble scoring and Denison Cabral who leads the Blast with 34 points is behind both Howes and Leite of Milwaukee. Look for tight marking on Howes and Leite and the Blast to try and force the other players to score. I like a low scoring match with Baltimore edging out a home win 8-7. Detroit faces Chicago in a mid-west showdown. These are 2 of the better teams but I like Detroit to win a roadie 17-13. Monterrey travels again to the East Coast but I like what I saw from them in Baltimore last week. New Jersey is a Jekyll and Hyde team right now and I like Monterrey to come east and get a win. Orlando hosts Philadelphia and I like Orlando at home to get win #2. On Sunday I like the home teams to rebound. Well it’s time for the MISL to shine as the NFL season is coming to a close and March madness is not here for another 7 weeks. Let’s hope the Blast get it going in Baltimore as we need something to cheer for in April because it won’t be at OPACY.

MISL PREVIEW

December 05, 2007 |

Two MISL expansion franchises kick off this weekend’s MISL action. Orlando "part of the winless in Florida theme along with the Dolphins" travels to Monterrey on Thursday to take on the (1) win La Ra Za. Dino Delevski has 9 goals and a total of 21 points. Orlando counters with J.P Rodriguez and his 14 points. Look for Monterrey to book win #2 on Thursday. The Fox Soccer channel serves up their weekly offering on Friday as the Wave take on the Kixx. The TV production has been horrific from Fox and they ought to turn it over to the Middle School kids at Parkville. I know they could do a better job. Anyway if you can sit through it I expect the Wave to get a win on the road. Both teams need a win to keep pace with the top 3 clubs so expect a close match. The Kixx are lead by Ptah Myers, and Angel Rivillio. The Wave has Greg Howes and Marcio Leite who have combined for 46 points. Nick Vorberg (Wave) (9.6GA) and Peter Pappas (Kixx) (9.76) will duel in goal.

Detroit visits Baltimore on Saturday in a re-match of last week’s Fox Soccer Channel offering. The Blast need to get back on track after dropping two consecutive games to drop out of first place. The Blast needs some creativity up front to get through Detroit. Detroit keeper Danny Waltman (9.59 GA) has been super lately after a rough start to the season. The Blast must stop Mike Apple and Ricardhino. Sagu was shaky last weekend vs. California but his defense let him down late in the game vs. California.

Orlando then gets a home game vs New Jersey on Saturday. New Jersey is the class of the expansion teams sporting just 1 loss so far. Tony Meola is having a good year and has transitioned well to indoor.

Chicago visits the Kixx on Saturday. The Kixx will look too re-bound after Friday’s trip to Milwaukee.

On Sunday Monterrey travel to the resurgent Cougars of California and the Wave travel to New Jersey. As always my predictions are in () next to the games. Have a great Soccer Weekend.

MISL PREVIEW

November 29, 2007 |

The MISL returns for its busiest weekend of the year starting with Thursday Nights contest between Milwaukee at Monterrey. The next few weeks will see the schedule become very busy before the MISL takes a holiday break with a reduced schedule before resuming with a full slate in the New Year. The schedule for this weekend features two home and home series. First, Milwaukee visits Monterrey and then a return engagement in Milwaukee is served up on Saturday. Secondly, winless Orlando visits Chicago and then returns to Orlando on Saturday to conclude the home and home series. The Baltimore Blast takes its act on the road to face the Ignition of Detroit on Friday and then return 24 hours later to the First Mariner Arena to face California. California makes trip east to face the resurgent Kixx and then a Saturday nightcap with the Blast. The team in the cat bird seat is the New Jersey ironmen who have just one contest at home as it takes on a Detroit team who has to battle the Blast at home and then fly east to face a rested New Jersey Team. Here are some quick takes on this weekend’s MISL action.

Milwaukee V. Monterrey

The Wave is lead by Marcio Leite who has 11 point and is coming off a 6 point effort vs. Orlando in their game from November the 16th. The Monterrey squad is lead by two former Kixx players in Genoni Martinez and Dino Delevski both with 11 points. Look for a split in this series.

Chicago V Orlando

Sad to say I think it’s going to be a one and done year for the Sharks. The crowds have been horrible and their play is about the same. The turf they use is an embarrassment and they showed the entire world last Wednesday with its game on the Fox Soccer Channel just how poor this franchise is. They use the old Chicago Storm carpet which didn’t even have the logo removed and the Sharks just put their logo right over it. Anyway for the action on the pitch look for Chicago with Mark Ughy and Chile Farias to take two this weekend and leave the Orlando Sharks and Miami Dolphins winless in Florida.

Baltimore vs. Detroit and California.

The Blast takes a balanced attack on the road to face a tough Detroit team. The Blast will have to rely on Machel Millwood and Denison Cabral to keep the attack going. If Sagu is healthy it will give the defense a boost. That defense will have to contend with Ricardinho and Jamar Beasley who pace the Detroit attack. Danny Waltman formerly of Chicago is now the full time net minder for the ignition as Sanaldo has moved on to California. Look for a low scoring game with Detroit earning the home win and giving the blast their first loss of the season. Next up for Baltimore will b California who is led by MISL player of the week Enrique Tovar. Also Sanaldo returns with bad intentions and in my opinion he should still be in Baltimore. Look for the Blast to rebound as the Cougars have a game Friday in Philly and they should be tired having to travel east and play back to back games. Thank the schedule makers for this one Baltimore.

Look for the Kixx to defeat the cougars on Friday and New Jersey to get a home win on Saturday vs. Detroit. As always my predicted scores are in (  ) below.
