Well this is it the California Road Show for Baltimore’s own undefeated Calvert Hall College Prep HS Baseball Team. This evening Calvert Hall faces El Dorado HS (CA) in the Anderson Bat National Classic High School Baseball tournament. The game starts at 7:15 pm at Cal State Fullerton. The Cards are Ranked #1 by Baseball America! In the hotel lounge a Jupiter HS (FL) coach was saying how the national rankings were BS and how they were going to “kick that east coast team Calvert Hall’s ass”. And the Calvert Hall coaching staff was sitting right there. This is going to be interesting. I know Coach Eckerl really wants to win this thing and I do too! I never went to CHC but many of my very good friends did and for Baltimore’s MIAA I really do hope that CHC brings home the championship from that tournament! I only hope that the jet lag and daylights savings time do not play a part in this tournament with our boys playing a game tonight at 10:15 EST! The Cards return 8 senior starters including Baltimore Sun’s 2007 ‘Player of the Year’ P/3B Kevin Lingerman, along with pitcher Mike Dillon and junior shortstop Patrick Blair. You should keep your eyes on the Sophmore 2nd baseman Patrick Fitzgerald. He is a real up and comer. He was the quarterback for the Cards Football team in the Turkey Bowl against Loyola this year too. The kid is a great athlete! The Cards are making their first appearance in the National Classic and are not respected by the west coast teams. Stomp’em in the ground Cards!
The co-host El Dorado Golden Hawks finished 2007 with a record of 20-8, losing to Mater Dei in the quarter-finals of the CIF Division I play-offs. Two, four-year varsity starters, Josh Canales (.338) and Brandon Ertle (.360), along with three-year starter, Ryan Remlinger (.398), will provide the nucleus for 2008. Senior pitcher, Mat Thomas (7-2), will lead a pitching staff with four returning lettermen.
St Johns (DC) played today at 12 pm and Coach Mark Gibbs’ Cadets beat Bishop Amat (CA) at Champions Sports Park in Placentia California 6-3. This is St John’s 2nd appearance in this event and because of their ability to play well in this thing last year are respected and not taken lightly at all.The Cadets are led by 2007 AFLAC All-American pitcher Scott Silverstein (Virginia) and 2007 Rawlings All-American LJ Hoes (North Carolina), the Cadets return 6 starters and 6 pitchers in 2008, including 9 seniors who have signed scholarships to play college baseball. They finished 2007 with a record of 23-6.
The 2008 Bishop Amat Lancers return thirteen lettermen from a team that finished 2007 with a record of 27-4, including a CIF championship. Leading the way will be seniors Maverick Olivarez (UC Irvine) and Chris Eusebio (Loyola Marymount), along with All-CIF players Andrew Mistone and Jordan Fox. Bishop Amat won the National Classic in 2001 and 2002 on their way to back-to-back National Championships. This will be their fourth appearance.
This tourney should make for some good baseball. We are all pulling for our hometown boys out in California. Represent the east well, CHC & SJ.
Hit it Square!
