NBA Finals, Heat vs. Mavericks

May 31, 2011 | Michael Schwartz

Tonight starts the NBA Finals, the Miami Heat versus the Dallas Mavericks. Lebron James faces off against Dirk Nowitzki in their quest to win their first NBA Title. Lebron has made one NBA Final appearance versus the San Antonio Spurs, but he lost. He did not have a supporting cast when he was in the Finals. Dirk made it to the NBA Finals in 2006 and faced the Miami Heat led by Dwayne Wade and Shaquille O’Neal, but Dirk and the Mavs lost. Both Lebron and Dirk have made a Finals appearance and both have lost, and now they are both more experienced and ready for another chance.

The Miami Heat went out in the off season and got Lebron James and Chris Bosh. Along with Dwayne Wade, these three were given very high expectations. They were expected to win championships within their first few years. The three of them said that they would win seven. This was a comment that was argued often by analyst and fans. After seeing the Heat in their first few games, they didn’t look like they had meshed yet. Some said they didn’t have enough practice, but others said they were just three totally different players and couldn’t play together. The Heat kept getting better as the year went on and ended in second place in the Eastern Conference. They beat the past champion Celtics 4-1 in a best of 7 series. They then beat the Bulls, who ended top of the Eastern Conference. They now have the toughest challenge of the year. The Heat feel that they can beat the Mavs, but they know stopping Dirk will be very difficult.

Dirk Nowitzki has carried this Mavericks team in this post season and is having the best year in the playoffs of his career. When the Mavericks played the Thunder, Dirk had two 40 point games. He shot over 95% from the foul line. In this series Dirk will likely be covered by Udonis Haslem and Lebron James. Dirk has been unstoppable in this post season. The Mavericks also have Jason Kidd, a future hall of famer. They have Tyson Chandler who brings leadership and a defensive presence to the Mavericks. They have one of the deepest benches in the NBA and they know how to score. They beat the Thunder 4-1 in the best of 7 series. The Mavericks will need to contain Lebron James and Chris Bosh if they want to win the series. Dwayne Wade has not been shooting well, but in the Finals he will likely play well.

I think this series will go 6 games. I think the Heat will win the series 4-2, and Lebron James will be the Finals MVP. Dirk will have a good series, because the Heat don’t have anybody who can guard Dirk. If Bosh is on him then Bosh will get in foul trouble, so they will likely put Haslem on him. Haslem will play physical defense on Dirk, but Dirk will keep coming back for more. James will likely average 27 points per game in the Finals. James will need the help of Bosh and Wade in order for the Heat to win. The big three have scored over 70% of the Heat’s points in this post season. The Heat will win this series and show the NBA why these three came together and how they can work together.
