It seems like this soap opera of a season is to air yet another episode. If reports are correct, now Robert Kraft of New England Patriots fame has thrown his hat into the ring. Couple this with the now confirmed reports that DIC was approached about taking minority shares in the group and it would seem that a club which was once the grand old dame of English football is now being whored out to the highest paying John while Mssrs. Gillett and Hicks have taken on the role of billionaire pimps.
Oh yes, Liverpool are also playing their makeup game against West Ham today. This, as is every game for the rest of the campaign, is a must win. Rafa points to a “crucial period” in the season. I’m not sure that has ever been a period that could be classified as non-crucial in any of Liverpool’s campaigns.
This will not be an easy game. The last five at Upton Park have been good to us, but this is a West Ham squad that is unbeaten in 7 and have won their last two at home. This is a fixture that has produced some corkers in recent history. Local legend, Shaka Hislop, was in net for the memorable FA Cup final on that balmy day in May in 2006.
Rafa’s halt time speech in the Havant and Waterlloville game should be on a loop in the boot room today. We need everything we can get to drag attention away from what is going on in the boardroom and back to the task at hand.
At just a tad over half way through the season, it looks like the title chase is out of our reach., and we are looking like we are drawing our way out of European contention.
Today’s line up: Reina, Finnan, Aurelio, Carragher, Hyypia, Gerrard, Alonso, Benayoun, Kewell, Torres, Kuyt. Subs: Itandje, Skrtel, Lucas, Babel, Crouch.
I expect to see Babel on at some point as the super-sub, with Kewell getting replaced. Rafa must be looking to sell the Aussie international and trying to tap him up ever so slightly for the transfer market.
Prediction: Liverpool 2 – West Ham 1
