O’s Today: Guthrie, Baez hammered by Florida Marlins

April 01, 2009 | Drew Forrester

Jeremy Guthrie allowed 8 runs and 10 hits in 4 innings today to cap his spring training work with the O’s.

Anyone else worried?

Guthrie surrendered 18 runs and 24 hits in 15.1 innings overall this spring.

Oh yeah, he got lit up in the World Baseball Classic.

I think I’ll pass on posting those numbers.

Let’s just say this:  Guthrie has not been effective this spring.  At all.

Putting it any other way would be a fib.

Meanwhile, Danys Baez replaced Guthrie in today’s game vs. the Marlins and promptly gave up 3 runs in his first inning of work.

O’s GM Andy MacPhail said today the club is going to go with a 12-man pitching rotation when they come north to Baltimore for the start of the regular season.

Bye-bye Danys Baez?

They’d have to pay him $6+ million if they release him…so THAT’S not gonna happen.  Look for Baez to come up with a sore hamstring or tight forearm in the next day or so and start the year on the DL.

As for Guthrie, he remains a key figure in any hope the O’s have of being semi-respectable in 2009.  If he’s bad…brace yourself.
