O’s Today: Montanez likely to undergo thumb surgery

May 23, 2009 | Drew Forrester

O’s outfielder/DH Lou Montanez is expected to undergo right thumb surgery in the near future and be lost to the club for 6-8 weeks.

Montanez initially suffered the injury while diving for a fly ball in Toronto on May 2nd.  He sought the advice of a hand specialist in Baltimore and underwent an MRI which revealed two torn ligaments near the base of his thumb.

Montanez has been in and out of the lineup since the injury and has experienced swelling on a regular basis but has continued to play.

He is available for duty tonight against the Nationals.
