O’s trade Hayden Penn to Marlins

April 01, 2009 | Drew Forrester

I guess the Orioles got *ahem* the 7-year itch.

After seven summers in the O’s organization, Hayden Penn was traded today to the Florida Marlins for what basically amounts to a bag of balls and some sunflower seeds.  The Birds acquired utility infielder Robert Andino (here are his stats…there’s not much to look at) in exchange for Penn.  Andino is a career .201 hitter in 144 major league at bats.  Don’t expect much.

Andino, like Penn, is out of options and must remain with the Orioles or be traded or waived.

Penn’s swan song with the O’s took place on Tuesday when he gave up 6 earned runs in 3.2 innings of work in a 7-3 loss to the Cardinals.  He won’t have far to go this afternoon to join his new team.  The O’s and Marlins play one another in a spring training game today.
