Pimlico: Selections for Friday (Day 6)

April 25, 2008 | Gary Quill

Only 8 days until the Kentucky Derby. I was thinking about a fresh, new idea for today’s blog… a “Mock Derby Post Position Draw” blog… NOT!  Thankfully, the real NFL Draft is on Saturday (like you didn’t know). What will we do with all of our free time AFTER the conclusion the NFL Draft this weekend? There’s no use for a “Mock NFL Draft # 423” blog.

Before my fellow WNST bloggers get their jock straps all twisted… it’s a joke… a lame one at that. So from now on, I’ll leave the jokes to the Pros… The Fighting Unger’s.

Recapping Day 5 (April 24th)…

Best Bet, Bernie (# 1; 5th race on the turf; 2-1) WON by a nose. There’s no better feeling than winning a close one, even though he was the prohibitive    (3-2) favorite, paying $5.20. That’s four consecutive Best Bet winners!
Longshot, Zangara (# 6; 4th race; 15-1) never picked up his feet the entire race. Considering he went off at 51-1, I must have been the only one who thought he had a chance here. Boy was I wrong! He finished dead last.

SHOW Parlay Play of the Day, $20 on Catlike Move (# 5; 3rd race; 5-2). Our second shot at this play died right here. Even though the betting public made him the 8-5 favorite, his 9 year old body just couldn’t reach down for that needed burst of energy to finish in the money. He ran 4th, just over one length behind the 3rd place finisher… Drat!

Here’s what I like for the Day 6 (Apr. 25th) of the Pimlico Spring Meet…

Best Bet:         Prowling Tiger          (# 1; 3rd race; 4-5)

Mario Pino comes back to Pimlico and has his pick-of-the-litter. The conditions of this race (Non-Winners of 2 lifetime) have attracted little competition for him. This “house horse” (owner Stronach Stables) will have to really drop off not to hit the Winner’s Circle today.

Longshot:        Coal Valley     (# 5; 4th race; 10-1)

I was torn between Coal Valley and Rahy’s Thief (# 6; 5th race; 30-1). The latter makes her turf debut. She has Rahy, who produces great turf runners, in her bloodlines. I’m not crazy about jockey Wesley Ho, so that’s why I opted for Coal Valley. Even though she’s going up in class, she’s actually facing weaker foes in this Non-Winners of 2 Lifetime (NW2L) race. Both of her horrible races were on an “Off” track. Three races back she lost by 5 lengths in a NW3L. If all of the moons align, she should hit the board.

SHOW Parlay available bankroll: $60.20

SHOW Parlay Play of the Day: $20 on Nicole’s Knight (# 1; 1st race; 5-1)

She has three (3) victories and one (1) third in five (5) lifetime starts at today’s distance (6 furlongs). The 5-1 Morning Line will probably be 5-2 come Post Time. But at this conjuncture, we are just looking to cash one.

Good Luck with your selections today!
