Preview of Colts vs. Jets Playoff Game

January 08, 2011 | Michael Schwartz

A matchup of last years AFC Championship. The New York Jets holding the 6th seed in the AFC is traveling to Indianapolis to take on Peyton Manning and the Colts. The Colts have had many injuries to their team, including Austin Collie, Dallas Clark, and Bob Sanders. Dallas Clark is one of the best tight ends in the NFL. Bob Sanders is a Pro Bowler and is a great safety. Austin Collie was Manning’s best target this year when he played. The offense is still one of the best in the NFL, and the Jets defense hasn’t been as good as it was last year. The Jets allowed the Bears 38 points and if the Bears can put up 38 with Jay Cutler at quarterback, then the Jets could let up 40+ to Manning. The Colts offense is able to run towards the end of the year, and that is led by Joseph Addai. Addai has been injured and when he is hurt, Donald Brown takes his place and has played very well. If the Jets don’t put pressure on Manning then they will get killed. However, if they blitz and don’t get the pressure then Manning will tear them apart. The Colts are a tough team to play against because if you blitz then he gets it off quick and if you drop into coverage he has time and will make a perfect pass. Manning is one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history and if the Jets can’t contain him then they will lose by a large margin.

The Jets offense has been good in some parts of the year, but have been awful in others. The Jets need to run the ball, and keep Peyton Manning off of the field. The Jets need L.T and Greene to play very well, and throughout the years the Colts are known to have a very weak run defense in the regular season. However, the Colts always step it up in the playoffs. The Colts have a great defensive line led by Dwight Freeney. Robert Mathis plays on the opposite side of Freeney and the Colts can get pressure with a 3 or 4 man rush because of these guys. They have a veteran middle linebacker, Gary Brackett. The Jets offense will need to run to set up the pass exactly how they got to the playoffs last year. Mark Sanchez is not an elite quarterback so they will have to do something to make the game easier for him and that is why they need to run. The Jets offense needs to keep the Colts offense off of the field and they will have a good shot to win if they do this.

Prediction: 27-13 Colts

This game will be a close game at half, but after halftime the Colts will pull ahead. Peyton Manning and the Colts will have a very average first half, but their second half will be amazing. The score at half will be the Jets within a touchdown or field goal. At halftime Peyton Manning will rally the troops and make the changes necessary and they will win because of that. The Jets defense will not be able to get to Manning and the rookie Kyle Wilson will get killed by Manning. Manning will get the matchups he wants on Wilson and then the Colts will score at will.
