This one’s for the girl: Rachel Alexandra wins Preakness in a rush

May 16, 2009 | WNST Staff

Even after the one-minute delay of the aptly-named Big Drama prior to the race, Rachel Alexandra came from the outside with Calvin Borel aboard, to smoke all the boys in the 134d running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.

Mine That Bird, with Mike Smith aboard, came from dead last once again to make a game run at the wire at Borel and the filly, but came up short.

The drama will now begin as Calvin Borel can with a Triple Crown on two different horses. He was much more subdued in the post parade. Rachel Alexandra has happy new owners in the Jackson wine family and will most certainly point to Belmont three weeks from now and the triangle of jockeys, horses and connections revolving around these two horses.
