It appears the Ravens are going to get their man after all. No, not Derrick Mason. Not yet, anyway.
Drew Bennett breezed into town today, impressed the folks at Owings Mills and is now going through the much-anticipated team physical in what is expected to be his final step before officially joining the team. Ravens veterans report to training camp next Tuesday.
As I reported here at WNST.net on Wednesday, Bennett is their “preferred choice” at wide receiver. But a broken foot in the first game of last season (with St. Louis) has been a concern throughout the NFL although Bennett himself has said on numerous occasions that he’s 100% health-wise and ready to make a contribution somewhere in 2009.
If Derrick Mason returns, a wide-receiver corps of Mason, Bennett, Mark Clayton and Demetrius Williams could be a solid foundation for Joe Flacco to work with in ’09.
If Mason does indeed retire, Bennett will be thrust into a more prominent role and Clayton and Williams will also have to upgrade their production this season.
Either way, Bennett – if healthy – should help the Ravens.
