It wasn’t too long ago that the common thought throughout college basketball was that if there were any great players who were also great students they would end up at Duke, and there were just enough of these players to fill out the Blue Devil’s roster. Boy how times have changed. Duke remains a perennial top five team, but if you look around the nation, many conference’s “academic school” is outplaying the jock schools.
When you look at the Big East (Notre Dame: AP #17), The Pac-Ten (Stanford: AP #8) and the SEC (Vanderbilt: AP #18 and just beat #1 Tennessee), these programs are proving that you can win and have players who actually go to class and graduate. If this trend continues, it’s going to put a newfound pressure on coaches all over the country.
