THE ‘BLAST’ HAVE THE STAGE BUT DO THEY HAVE THE GOODS?

December 30, 2007 |

It’s nice to see Amy Keller contributing to the WNST blog family. I’ve enjoyed her two blogs to date and I look forward to reading more from her. The Blast and indoor soccer need more exposure and I’m thankful we have WNST to share our thoughts about the MISL, Blast and indoor soccer. She is right in the fact that there are more than 22 fans of indoor soccer in Baltimore. The attendance continues strong even with the holiday’s and the NFL dominating the landscape and the teams sixth place showing so far. Even at the WWE Wresting show last night (SEE RESULTS BELOW) people wanted to know what the Patriots v. Giants score was. Amazing how the Patriots have captured the NFL and sports landscape isn’t it?

Back to the Blast. My sources tell me that Ed Hale visited training about 10 days ago and let some people have it. Those individuals included veteran players who have not been contributing at the level we’ve become accustomed too. Changes have also been promised if the losing streak continues. The Blast will have Adauto Neto back in their upcoming Friday night game vs. New Jersey. New Jersey recently went to Monterrey and defeated the La Ra Za which is no easy task. The Blast which started so hot has cooled like Rudi Giuliani has in the polls. The next six weeks offer a chance for the Blast to garner some more attention as: the Ravens miserable season has come to an end, the Terps basketball team (7-6) might not beat Dunbar high School right now, and the Orioles…well you know the deal on that, FTB III anyone on opening day? The changes Ed Hale spoke of "should" include a coaching change if this Friday the team goes down again.

New Jersey will be no push over as Omid Namazi has that expansion team headed in the right direction. Honestly, it’s kind of embarrassing for Baltimore and Philadelphia to be so pathetic so far this year compared to New Jersey an expansion team with a goalie who is on the team for name value only that’s Tony Meola. He currently ranks 7th in goals against average. I scouted him recently and his indoor goalkeeping technique is questionable to say the least. If I were the Blast I’d attack his feet when he tries to distribute the ball. He’s not the best passer in the world and they should be able to get some transition goal  chances if they press the attack. New Jersey is led by forward Dan Antonuik (33 points), Goran Vasic (27 points) Lazo Alavanja (24 points) and goalkeeper Tony Meola’s 10.54 goals against. New Jersey sits tied for second in the standings at (7-3).

We’ll see how the Blast responds to the layoff. It will have been two weeks since they’ve played a competitive game. If they start out well it will be a good night. The Blast have recently had some huge deficits to climb out of vs California and Monterrey. The Blast rank almost last in 1st quarter points given up (25) only to be better than Orlando (74) and Monterrey (48) in that category It’s tough when your down 3 or 4 goals to start the game you have to play differently and expend a lot of energy to catch up which makes it hard in the 4th quarter to sustain the energy needed to be victorious. The entire teams character is on the line here and I’m not sure they have the balance needed to make a sustained run this year. Something is missing in this years team and for me it was the emotional Lee Tschantret who was unceremoniously dumped by the club when he chose to coach at Loyola Blakefield this fall. They sure could use his fire and passion now! Starting January 4, 2008 we’ll see if the Blast indeed takes advantage of the winter sports boredom window they now have and put some W’s and some positive press for all 22 fans of the team. Baltimore sure could use a positive story right now regardless of who the team or sport it comes from.
