The Orioles Start

April 12, 2012 | Derek Halford

Well of course all of us got excited when the O’s started 3-0. Starting pitchers only allowing 1 ER in the series vs. the Twins. Jake Arrieta went 7 innings with no runs given up. Tommy Hunter went 7 innings allowing 2 unearned runs. Then the 3rd game, Jason Hammel took a no-hitter into the 8th. The offense provided runs to back up the pitchers.

Then the 3 game series with the Yankees. We got swept. Why? Well the first game, Matusz only lasted 4 innings giving up 4 runs. The offense only scored 2 runs. The second game, Wada pitched pretty well in his ML debut. But the bullpen allowed some runs and J.J. Hardy didn’t come through with bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th. The 3rd game, Arrieta pitched well but couldn’t get the last out in the 7th inning which caused the game to be tied up when they brought Ayala in. Once again the O’s had the chance to win it in the bottom of 9th with bases loaded for Adam Jones but he struckout. So we were 2 hits away from getting 2 out of 3.

It’s simple, and it’s the same thing from Little League on up. If our pitchers can get through 7 innings and the offense can provide runs, they will win. And I believe the Orioles have the players to do it. In my opinion I think this is the year the O’s will finish .500.

What do you think, above or below 81 wins this season?
