The Ravens Have 7 Pro Bowlers, but Deserve 4

December 27, 2011 | Michael Schwartz

Seven Ravens made the Pro Bowl this year Ray Rice, Vonta Leach, Marshall Yanda, Haloti Ngata, Terrell Suggs, Ray Lewis, and Ed Reed. Some of these were very surprising to me; Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, and Terrell Suggs.

This year Ed Reed has three interceptions. Two were in Week 1, when the Ravens annihilated the Steelers and Ben was under such pressure he just threw them up. After that he went over half the year with no picks and then finally got another. He hasn’t had one since that game against the Bengals. Also Reed is not a factor in stopping the run or tackling anybody in the open field. Reed made it on popularity and people expect him to have a big year. If they don’t follow his stats or watch him; they just assume that he is a Pro Bowler and he is not.

Ray Lewis also made it on his name. He is still one of the top linebackers in the NFL, but there are other players better then him. He also missed four games and I don’t know how people can make it if they miss games due to injury. He made it because people expect him to have a great year because he is Ray Lewis.

Terrell Suggs has no reason to be in the Pro Bowl. He is a very overrated player. He has 13 sacks on the year, but he is very inconsistent. He has 11 sacks in four games but two in the other 11 games. He has five sacks against the Steelers this year, three against the 49ers, and three against the Colts. I don’t see Suggs being a top 5 pass rusher in the NFL. Jared Allen, Tamba Hali, Clay Matthews, Von Miller, Demarcus Ware, Justin Babin, and Jason Pierre-Paul. These guys had just as good of years if not better. On multiple occasions he doesn’t finish the plays because he is busy celebrating.

Ray Rice made the Pro Bowl because he had a fantastic year. He is leading the NFL in yards from scrimmage. Ray Rice is the centerpiece of the Ravens offense. He can catch balls out of the backfield, he can line up as a receiver, and he can just run the ball well. It is only fitting that his fullback Vonta Leach made it. He opens up the holes for Ray Rice and can also catch the ball out of the backfield. Marshall Yanda is one of the most underrated linemen in the NFL. He is a second team Pro Bowler, but he is still a Pro Bowler. He is terrific at pulling to create a seal. Haloti Ngata deserves it also because he forces a double team on every play. Teams struggle to run against the Ravens because he is in the middle. The Ravens deserve four Pro Bowlers, but not seven.
