Greene, Proctor come alive late to give UMBC win over Albany

March 01, 2009 | Drew Forrester

Review — Chauncey Gilliam led UMBC with 19 points but Jay Greene and Darryl Proctor both contributed down the stretch to go out winners on “Senior Day”, as UMBC held off pesky Albany, 68-64.  Greene had 6 points in the game’s final two minutes and Proctor hit four big foul shots in the final 30 seconds as the Retrievers ended the ’08-09 regular season with a win.  It was a special day at the RAC as a near sell-out crowd celebrated the outstanding careers of Greene (all-time assist leader at UMBC) and Proctor, but it was the freshman Gilliam who paced the Retrievers until late in the game when the two seniors hit key foul shots to give UMBC the win and a 7-9 record in America East.

2:50 remaining/2nd half —  Chauncey Gilliam continues to lead the way (19 points) but Albany won’t go down quietly as the Great Danes are now within four at 60-56 with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game.  Jay Greene has just hit a pair of foul shots (his first points of the second half) to give the Retrievers the 4-point edge.

7:05 remaining/2nd half —  Freshman Chauncey Gilliam has assumed the “Senior Day” spotlight here at UMBC, as he has 7 second-half points and leads UMBC in scoring with 16 overall as the Retrievers hang on to a 49-47 lead over Albany at the RAC Arena.  Jay Greene (3 points) and Darryl Proctor (7 points) are both well under their per-game average but Gilliam and Matt Spadafora (11 points) are making up for it.

14:07 remaining/2nd half —  UMBC has fought their way into the lead here early in the second half at the RAC, as Darryl Proctor, Matt Spadafora and Chauncey Gilliam have helped the Retrievers rebound from a 5-point halftime deficit to lead, 38-36.

Halftime —  Matt Spadafora of UMBC hit a shot in the waning seconds of the first half to move the Retrievers with 5 points at the break.  Albany leads, 34-29, on Senior Day, as both Darryl Proctor (4 points) and Jay Greene (3 pts) had slow first halves for the Retrievers.  Three Albany players had six points each.

3:08 remaining/1st-half —  Chauncey Gilliam now has a game-high 9 points for the host Retrievers but Albany leads, 31-27, late in the first half here at the RAC.  Albany’s big man, Brett Gifford, has 6 points in the last few minutes…Retrievers can’t stop him inside.

6:14 remaining/1st-half —  Albany continues to lead in the first half, 26-20, but both Jay Greene and Darryl Proctor have come alive in the last few minutes.  Greene hit a big 3-pointer to get the crowd going and Proctor had a huge rebound and a put-back just a few seconds ago that brought UMBC within 6.

12:05 remaining/1st-half —  It was a dramatic Senior Day presentation but when the basketball game started today, Albany got down to business.  They lead UMBC, 19-13 midway through the first half.  Chauncey Gilliam leads UMBC with 5 points.  Jay Greene just hit a 3-pointer from BWI Airport to bring the crowd to its feet.

Pre-game — I’m at UMBC today for the final home game in the careers of two outstanding UMBC basketball players, Jay Greene and Darryl Proctor.

The place is FILLED with black “Jay Greene #2″ t-shirts and when Senior Day commences in about 20 minutes or so, there will be a lot of tears shed here at the RAC.  Greene’s family is here handing out Retriever “paws” and spreading the good cheer.  Last March, when UMBC handed Hartford a loss in the America East championship game, the RAC was hoppin’.  I have a feeling this place is going to be hot today as well.

UMBC hosts Albany, by the way.  I almost forgot there’s a basketball game today.

Back with more in a while.
