Who’s on 1st? What’s on 2nd? I don’t know’s on 3rd!!!

May 30, 2011 | Keith Melchior

May 30th finds the Orioles 3 games below the magical .500 line, nearly the closest they’ve been to that mark since the All-Star break of 2006. They’ve fought hard to get where they are, but the lack of timely hitting, some terrible pitching, and failure of the starters to consistently go deep into games has hurt, badly. Sure, they are only 5 games out of first place in the newly nicknamed “AL Least”, but with any luck, they could be sitting atop the division instead of at the bottom, again.

You can almost see the similarities of the 2011 version of the Orioles with the classic Abbott and Costello routine “Who’s on First?”

The AAA Express has been extremely busy as of late, so much that it seems like we hardly know who the players are unless we have a scorecard, that is, if the players are even in Baltimore long enough to get on the scorecard.  I have been watching them or listening on the radio mostly all season long and had no idea some of the more recent moves were even made. Only Matt Wieters, Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, J.J. Hardy and Vladimir Guerrero have played in their normal positions (if DH is considered a normal position.) Lately, it seems many players have been playing out of their normal positions on a daily basis. Robert Andino has been seen at 3rd, short, 2nd and in left field. Where’s Luke Scott? Oh, he’s on 1st. What about Felix Pie?  He’s on the bench.

When Derreck Lee went on the DL, they brought up Brandon Snyder to play 1st. Obviously that didn’t work out because I’ve seen Jake Fox, Luke Scott and Mark Reynolds all playing there within the last week. When I clicked on the transactions this morning, I see Snyder has been gone since before the team took the field against Kansas City last week.  The team recalled light hitting Craig Tatum to backup Matt Wieters behind the plate. Wait a minute, I thought Jake Fox was the backup catcher. No, Fox is on 1st. Who’s Ryan Adams. He’s on 2nd. I don’t know….He’s on 3rd! And when did Jason Berken get sent to AAA? I thought Alfredo Simon was still in jail. When did he join the team? How many chances is Chris Jakubauskas going to get before he disappears and the team re-signs Mark Hendrickson and Adam Eaton? And who the heck is Pedro Viola? And when did the “7-day” disabled list come about?  Brian Roberts has been on it for the last 14 days.

It seems to me that a team trying to build chemistry for a playoff run and for the long term cannot continue the constant shuffling of players back and forth between the majors and the minors. The team is suffering from inconsistency and all the player movements aren’t helping the cause at the present time.

Here’s all the roster moves the Orioles have made from March 28th up until late last night when both Bergesen and Tillman caught rides on the AAA Express. Tell me you don’t need a scorecard, now.
