If you followed the WNST Baltimore Idol Competition (and congratulations to the winner, Chris Vinson, by the way), you heard Nestor Aparicio talk about my love and involvement with professional wrestling. For the last 25 years, I have watched pro wrestling. And while a lot of sports fans do not like pro wrestling, there are a lot that do. Professional wrestling provides the drama and action, with just enough comedy to keep me entertained.
Towards the beginning of my love for the industry of pro wrestling, I found out about a wrestler who many old-school fans loved. For them, he was their generation’s Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin, or John Cena. That man was BRUNO SAMMMARTINO! For 25 years, Sammartino was the industry’s top attraction. Fans drove from far places and paid a lot of money to see him. He is a wrestling icon. Sammartino held the WWE Championship across two reigns for over 11 years in total, as well as the longest single WWE Championship reign in professional wrestling history (seven years, eight months, and one day). He has also headlined more Madison Square Garden cards (211), with 187 sellouts. He also was on the top of many cards at the Baltimore Civic Center (now-First Mariner Arena). I got to see him wrestle Randy “Macho Man” Savage in the mid-80s, as Sammartino’s career was winding down. With just like any larger-than-life athlete, you always wanted to meet them and ask them a few questions. Well now, WNST is giving you that chance.
On Saturday, October 9th at 1pm, WNST will present “My Italian Dinner with Bruno Sammartino,” at Amicci’s in Little Italy – 231 South High Street in Downtown Baltimore. The event will be hosted by WNST’s Nestor Aparicio & Baltimore Sun Wrestling Columnist & Maryland Championship Wrestling official Kevin Eck. The afternoon gathering will feature a delicious dinner with all of the Italian favorites and an open bar throughout the engagement. Plus, there will be an open microphone with Bruno and you’ll have the chance to ask him questions. All of which will be presented wnsTV. He will also tell some of his favorite stories. And there will be photo and autograph opportunities and a chance for some chat time with the champ. And afterwards, head over to the Joppatowne Plaza Flea Market, and enjoy Maryland Championship Wrestling’s live event, which will feature more former WWE stars: Mickie James, Carlito, & The Hurricane.
