WNST.net returns to Carroll County this Tuesday night, April 16th, for a NFL Draft Preview show starring our very own Coach Brian Billick and presented by our friends at Freedmont Mortgage.

The first Super Bowl winning head coach of the Baltimore Ravens and a former Carroll County resident himself, Coach Billick has been studying the NFL Draft for the past few months as he prepares for his NFL Network broadcast duties on Draft weekend. Coach will be ready to answer your questions about Mant’i Teo, Tyrann “Honey Badger” Mathieu, Alec Ogletree, D.J. Fluker, Kevin Minter, Jesse Williams and any other players the Baltimore Ravens may be considering this year.

Coach was in the room when the Ravens selected the likes of Ed Reed, Todd Heap, Jamal Lewis, Terrell Suggs, Ben Grubbs, Haloti Ngata, Chris McAlister, Adalius Thomas, Jarret Johnson, Sam Koch, Marshal Yanda and more. His qualifications are impeccable. (We’re also aware he was in the room when the Ravens selected Kyle Boller, but after Joe Flacco lead the Ravens to another Super Bowl title we’re pretty sure it’s time to forgive that.)

Greenmount Station is located at 1631 N. Main Street in Hampstead and is the home of Carroll County’s best crab cakes. We were blown away by the support of WNST from the Purple Rowdies in Hampstead when we rolled out that way in the fall for our “Thursday Night Live” series with Dennis Pitta and we can’t wait to be back out there. Kickoff time for the taping of the show is 7pm Tuesday night and the show will air later in the week on AM1570 WNST.net. Get there early and grab a great spot, enjoy some great food and have a cold beer, it’s going to be a fun evening.

Coach is always willing to take pictures and sign autographs for fans in attendance, as well as answer that question that’s been bugging you for 10 years. If you want to ask something along the lines of “Coach, did you ever lose the Vince Lombardi Trophy after winning Super Bowl XXXV like the Ravens did after winning Super Bowl XLVII?” he’ll give you an honest answer. (Which we’re pretty sure is “no”, but admittedly not certain.)

It’s our NFL Draft Preview Show with Coach Brian Billick presented by Freedmont Mortgage, taping Tuesday night at 7pm at Greenmount Station in Hampstead. We can’t wait to see you out there.

When the Ravens let go of Cam Cameron they also sent away a target that was protecting lots of others who didn't perform up to standards. So what now?

The post Say Good-Bye to the Scapegoat appeared first on We Never Stop Talking Baltimore Sports.

Say good-bye to the bad guy. Say good-bye to the boogieman.

On Monday the Ravens said good-bye to offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. And while he was seemingly in the minds of most fans the answer to all that ailed the team, he was also by most accounts a good man.

A good man lost his job, and for many, the fans of the team, the mob that had assembled and called routinely for his head for three years running, that can be seen as cause for celebration. We don’t celebrate lightly. A good man lost his job and that’s never an instance in which we should revel. This however is sports, and such celebrations are not only par for the course, but in knowing that Cameron will bounce back, will land on his feet, will find an opportunity elsewhere before very long, we can safely (and in good conscience) celebrate the fact hat he’ll no longer be a pox on our house.

Inside the Castle however, the residents have no such luxury. While the departure of Cameron is being sold as for the greater good, and while the move was made in hopes that in order to improve, in order to fix what ailed the Ravens there would have to be a casualty…at least one, Cameron takes with him the gigantic target that he’s carried for at least the last 3 seasons.

So now, the angry faction of Ravens fans who feel that winning is their birthright will have to find somewhere else to direct their anger and frustration. It’s all but certain that while Cameron was a part (probably a big part) of the “struggles” of a 9-4 team on their way to a 5th straight trip to the playoffs, it’s at least equally certain that he wasn’t the only problem. He however has been cast aside in the name of progress and improvement, and if that progress and improvement isn’t forthcoming…and soon…the angry (by nature) fans will find another target for their anger.

Those who are left behind to pick up the pieces had better do so quickly, or they might be the next to carry the target. And there’s no shortage of candidates who should be feeling the pressure to insure that it’s not them.

Joe Flacco

If Cameron was the most criticized member of this Ravens organization, the quarterback, Joe Flacco isn’t far behind. Flacco, once touted as the offensive savior of this team, has failed to progress at the pace that many had hoped or expected. Now he stands to cash a much more substantial check from the team, and it appears that the move made to fire Cameron was, as much as anything else, an attempt to quickly assess what they have in their franchise QB before they decide to pay him franchise money.

Clearly the Ravens are in no position to part company with Flacco, as much as some fans might suggest it, but big decisions will have to be made nonetheless. And with each passing game, regardless of his performance, Flacco’s leverage over the team seems to increase.

While most, even those in the quarterback’s own camp would probably concede that he’s not worth $16+ million per season, that’s essentially what he’ll cost if a happy medium can’t be found. And from the QB’s perspective, having remained upright and healthy for the first 4, going on 5 years of his career, gambling on himself to remain upright and healthy for another 16 games under the franchise tag doesn’t seem like much of a stretch. If it indeed comes to that, and Flacco is left to wear the franchise tag in 2013 at a price tag of over $16 million, a second season under the tag would net him closer to $20 million. And a 3rd season after that under the tag becomes almost so preclusive from a team standpoint that allowing Flacco into free agency would likely be the team’s “only” choice. So at the very least Flacco is all but guaranteed 2 years at $37 million or so, with free agency to follow after 2014.

Cam Cameron was let go after an up and down 86 games as Ravens’ offensive coordinator. Under his watch, they were never a top 10 offense. The team won mainly because of the defense and special teams. In 2012, the defense could no longer bail them out of tough situations and poor field position. The team, although 9-4, finds themselves looking to get their first December win after a 4-0 November. They need to finish strong to convince the rest of the NFL they are serious Super Bowl CONtenders and not PREtenders.

The Ravens offensive woes story continues. In 1996 it was Ted Marchibroda (the original author of “Hey diddle diddle , Lydell up the middle” and his 1,2,3 kick offense in the 70′s), then it was Matt Cavanaugh, then Jim Fassel, then Brian Billick, then Cam Cameron. Now it’s Jim Caldwell. No matter who the offensive coordinator is in Baltimore, he WILL be blamed if the team continues the up and down roller coaster ride on the offensive side of the ball.

Cam Cameron was the scapegoat of a team that averaged about 30 points a game in 6 games at home and 18 points in 7 games on the road. Big wins against Cincinnati, New England, Dallas and Oakland at home and San Diego and Pittsburgh on the road were overshadowed by losses to on the road to Philadelphia and Houston, a terrible performance where they escaped with a 9-6 win at Kansas City, then losing to a 60 yr old immobile Charlie Batch at home and choking up a lead in the 4th quarter against an injured RG3′s replacement, Kurt, or is it Kirk, Cousins and then falling in overtime after a huge punt return put the Redskins in great field position in OT.

So why Cam Cameron and not Dean Pees? When you look back on the season, it was the defense who gave up late leads against Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Washington, but yet held on to leads against New England and Dallas. On the road, they held KC to 6 points and SD to 13 points. Only against Houston was the defense totally exposed, but that was after the offense sputtered and stalled after taking a 3-0 lead early and giving up a safety which started the opening of the flood gates.

Does the defense get a pass because of all the injuries? With Cameron’s ejection from the palace this morning, it appears that way, for now. Starters Lardarius Webb, Jimmy Smith, Terrell Suggs, Ray Lewis, and Dannell Ellerbee have missed multiple games on the defensive side of the ball. Only tight ends Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta have missed time on the offensive side.

Jim Caldwell has called as many plays in the NFL as I have, so it will be interesting to see what happens on Sunday when Peyton brings the Broncos to town. The defense is rumored to not like the no-huddle offense because if it fails they are back on the field after about 90 seconds. Manning will light them up if that happens. Actually with little Manning brother coming in a week later, the defense could really be strapped and the Ravens could well be 9-6 needing a win in Cincinnati to even secure a spot in the playoffs.

People have been calling for Cameron’s head for the last 4 years, just like they called for Marchibroda’s in the 70′s and late 90′s, Cavanaugh’s in the early 2000′s, Fassel’s and Billick’s in the mid 2000′s. Well, folks, with 15 days until Christmas, you got what you wished for. Now who are we going to blame? Flacco? Caldwell? Pees? Harbaugh? Ozzie? Stay tuned, it’ll be a wild and unpredictable final 3 weeks of Baltimore Ravens football

Here’s another nice mess they’ve gotten us into…..
