The Swinging Bunt
Sweet 16 action continues. Thursday and Friday. Four games one night, and four the next. Only the 16 best college basketball teams remain. How about that? The 16 best teams, Cornell, Saint Mary’s, and Northern Iowa, all very much included. One of my favorite play-by-play lines of all-time comes from my man, Gus Johnson, talking about the original modern-day Cinderella, Gonzaga, as they knocked out Florida in the Sweet 16 to move into the 1999 Elite 8. Buzzer sounds, building going nuts, players going crazy on the floor, and Gus says, “It’s over! Gonzaga! … the slipper still fits!” Gives me chills. I, just like everyone else, couldn’t wait to see an Ohio State – Georgetown match-up in this round. We didn’t get it. More than fine with me. Seeing lower seeds advance to the Sweet 16 is great; I mean come on people… Ali Farokhmanesh! Seeing one of these teams get through to this weekend, even better. Only George Mason has fit into their slippers long enough for a run from a mid-major to the Final Four. Here’s hoping for another.
Scanning the Blogosphere
WNST.net: “Bergesen, Jones carry Orioles over Yankees 8-0.” Bergesen has been the most impressive Oriole starter by far down in Sarasota. Can he lead this team in wins this year? I know one thing I’d bet on… he won’t lead them in losses.
TheBigLead: They’re down to the Elite 8 in their 64-subject “2010 Culture Tournament.” The match-ups: No. 1 Need for a College Football Playoff vs. No. 2 Tiger Woods’ Bimbo Brigade (Sportish Region), No. 9 Julia Mancuso vs. No. 14 Brooklyn Decker (Women Region), No. 13 Tiger Woods’ Sex Addiction vs. Gilbert Arenas’ Guns (Sports/Media Region), and No. 8 David Letterman’s Staffer Affairs vs. No. 2 The Conan Disaster (Arts and Entertainment Region).
FanHouse: Chris Tomasson “Butler comfortable with ‘Hoosiers’ Image.” Milan High School ended up being an huge underdog winning the Indiana State High School Basketball Tournament in 1954 on Butler’s campus at Hinckle Fieldhouse to inspire the movie. Can Butler play that role to an NCAA Tournament Championship in 2010 in Indianapolis next weekend?
AwfulAnnouncing: “Your Sweet Sixteen Announcing Schedule” Please, please lower seeds in Salt Lake City: Butler and Xavier, if you could really try your best, I’d really like to see Gus Johnson have something to get ‘excitable’ about tonight.
ESPN.com: Andy Katz reports “Source: Hewitt turns down St. John’s.” It seems that Virginia Tech’s Seth Greenberg is now the new leading candidate.
SportsbyBrooks: “Big Ben Accuser: .20 BAC, Fake ID, No Follow-Up” Yikes, ugly, ugly, ugly situation.
ESPN.com: Dana O’Neil says , for Cornell, “No Scholarship, no problem.” The true ‘last amateurs’ of college hoops.
SI.com: Frank Deford follows up on the recent, “Sad State of New York Hoops.”
FIBA.com: The official website of basketball’s global governing body reports, “Real Madrid ready to splash the cash for Ginobili.” Spanish speaking 32-year old free agent… $13.5M a year to play in Spain? OK, I’ll buy it.
Yahoo! Sports: Kevin Kole alerts us that Tiago, “Alves scratched from UFC 111,” …due to a “Brain Irregularity.” Scary stuff.
WithLeather: “Dwight Good ‘YAWN’ gets a DUI.” – Yawn.

Josh Smith clinched a playoff birth for his team, the Atlanta Hawks, with this game-winning put-back last night. Haha ‘put-back.’ How about this… Josh Smith DUNKED the Magic to their 22nd loss of the year!
Is this Urban Meyer outburst at Orlando Sentinel writer Jeremy Fowler a case of an arrogant multimillion dollar football coach bullying a reporter, or a 2-time national title winning football coach taking all the pressure off one of his student/athletes by shifting media scrutiny to himself? Both.
