GENEVA, N.Y. – The Ohio State University scored with 93 seconds left in the third quarter to trim Loyola University Maryland’s 11-9 lead to one goal going into the final 15 minutes, and the Buckeyes then reeled off seven unanswered in the final quarter to defeat the Greyhounds, 18-11, on Thursday night in the ECAC Lacrosse League Semifinals at Hobart College.

Ohio State (11-3 overall) tied the score at 9-9 on an unassisted David Planning goal from the left side with 8:41 to go in the third quarter, but Mike Sawyer face dodged a defender and scored 1:52 later to put the Greyhounds (10-4) back in front.

Davis Butts then made a left-to-right run at the top of the offensive zone and flipped the ball to Chris Layne who scored from 10 yards out at 3:59, pushing the Greyhounds out to a three-goal lead, 11-9.

The Buckeyes’ Dominique Alexander beat his defender down the left side and fed Carter Brown for a goal with 1:33 left in the quarter, and Ohio State was within a goal. Alexander had a career-high five assists in the game, as well as a second-quarter goal.

ECAC Offensive Player of the Year Logan Schuss then scored two in a row, both off Planning assists, and Jesse King tallied two straight after that, giving the Buckeyes a 14-11 advantage with 7:07 left on the clock.

Charlie Schnider added a goal with 3:46 remaining in regulation, and Schuss scored two more, including an empty-netter, before Michael Italiano added the final tally for Ohio State.

Schuss had five goals and an assist in the game, and King tallied four goals and an assist.

Loyola outshot the Buckeyes, 41-37, in the game, but Ohio State took 15 fourth-quarter shots to the Greyhounds five. Loyola also committed three turnovers in the final 15 minutes and had 13 in the game.

After Sawyer 17 seconds into the game following a loose ball in front of the Ohio State goal, the Buckeyes csored three in a row and led, 3-1, on Schuss’ first goal of the game with 6:14 to go in the first quarter.

Sawyer would add a goal at 1:25 off one of Nikko Pontrello’s two assists, and he tied the game 1:13 into the second quarter when Justin Ward threaded a fast pass across the crease to Sawyer on the left side.

Blake Burkhart, who won 10-of-15 faceoffs in the first half for Loyola, scooped up a ground ball on the faceoff after Sawyer’s game-tying goal, raced into the box and scored his first collegiate goal at 13:41 to put Loyola in front, 4-3.

The teams traded six goals before the end of the half, and a Ward goal with 22 ticks on the clock after he rolled off a check put Loyola up, 7-6, at the break.

Davis Butts then scored to open the second quarter, but Turner Evans got Ohio State back within a goal 10 seconds later. King then scored a minute later to tie the game at 8-8.

Matt Sawyer ripped a 13-yard shot off a Layne assist at 11:22, and the goal-trading continued between the teams.

Mike Sawyer finished with a team-high four goals for Loyola, giving him four hat tricks in the Greyhounds’ last four games. He has scored 15 goals since April 13.

Pontrello added two goals and two assists, while Butts and Ward each had a goal and an assist, and Layne tallied a goal and an assist. Matt Sawyer and Burkhart each had goals, and Sean O’Sullivan tallied an assist.

Loyola will find out its NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday, May 5, at 9 p.m. when the NCAA Selection Show airs on ESPNU.

Stony Brook, N.Y. – Senior Joe Lustgarten (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) capped a furious UMBC rally with the game-winning score with 55 seconds remaining and added an insurance marker 21 seconds later as No. 3 UMBC defeated No. 2 Hartford, 15-13, in the America East Conference semifinals at Stony Brook’s LaValle Stadium.

The Retrievers (7-7) advance to their first championship game since 2009, where they will face No. 1 Albany, a 1715 winner over No. 4 Stony Brook.

Lustgarten led the Retrievers with four goals and two assists, while senior attackman Scott Jones (Port Coquitlam, B.C./Terry Fox) and freshman midfielder Pat Young (Ewing, N.J./Christchurch School) added three goals each for UMBC. Junior face-off specialist Phil Poe (Harwood, Md./DeMatha) won 22 of 29 face-offs in the game, including 10 of 11 in the fourth quarter.

“Down the stretch, when it counted, these guys stepped up and won a big, tough ballgame against a very good Hartford team,” said head coach Don Zimmerman “We have worked hard this year. In the last six minutes…, the team we believe we can be and are, showed up and got us the win.”

UMBC trailed the Hawks, 13-9, after Hartford’s Jared Franze capped a 4-0 Hawk run with a score at the 10:18 mark of the fourth quarter. But Poe would win the final six face-offs of the game to turn the tide back to UMBC.

Lustgarten broke the drought with his second goal of the day with 5:46 remaining. Just 81 seconds later, the Retreivers had cut the deficit to 13-12, as senior attackman Matt Gregore (Crofton, Md./South River) and Jones scored in a span of 29 seconds.

The Hawks committed a penalty with 2:30 remaining, and Young took advantage, dodging a man at the top and bouncing a shot past UH goalkeeper Frank Piechota to knot the score at 13-all with 2:01 remaining.

Lustgarten, who scored a career-high five goals vs. Hartford in 2012, was not to be denied in the final minute. On the game-winning goal, he dodged from behind the left side of the net, got to the middle and bounced a shot past Piechota.

Poe controlled the ensuing draw, but the ball was knocked away along the sideline. Lustgarten won the ground ball battle, drove in and scored the insurance goal with 34 seconds to play.

UMBC senior midfielder Dave Brown (Coopersburg, Pa./The Hill School) added two goals for UMBC. Hartford (7-7) was led by freshman attackman Jack Bobzien, who scored five goals.

UMBC controlled play for much of the first half, as the Retrievers controlled 9-of-13 face offs and outshot the Hawks, 24-17. UMBC got out to a 3-1 lead after one quarter, as junior midfielder Will Fejes (Solomons, Md./St. Mary’s Ryken) scored his first career goal to break the ice 3:53 into the game. Brown and Young added scores for the Retrievers, and Young’s score occurred with 12 seconds to play in the first stanza .

The Retrievers would extend the lead to as many as four goals, on Young’s second goal of the half, as UMBC took a 7-3 advantage with 2:06 to play in the frame. But Hartford took advantage of a late Retriever foul, and scored an extra-man goal with 18 ticks remaining in the half and sliced UMBC’s lead to 7-4 at the break.

But Hartford outscored UMBC, 5-2, in the third quarter. The Hawks took their first lead of the game at 9-8 late in the quarter, before Jones knotted the game at 9-9 after 45 minutes.

The Retrievers avenged a 15-14 overtime loss at Hartford on March 30.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Kevin Cooper had six points on three goals and three assists to lead the No. 2 University of Maryland men’s lacrosse team to a 23-6 victory over Mount St. Mary’s in its 2013 season opener at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium Tuesday afternoon.

The 23 goals scored were the most for the Terps (1-0) since March 21, 1995 when they beat Radford 26-3.

Maryland started out the game on fire, scoring the first seven goals of the game in just over 10 minutes of play. Senior John Haus opened the scoring at 14:15 off of a dodge, finishing with a top-shelf shot.

Senior Billy Gribbin doubled the lead with 11:27 remaining, scoring a transition goal started on a save from junior Niko Amato and assisted by junior Brian Cooper.

Kevin Cooper scored his first goal of the day at 10:26 off of a bounce shot. Just over a minute later, senior Jake Bernhardt scored his first of four goals on the day, off of a feed from Haus, to increase the lead to 4-0.

Haus scored his second of the game with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half off of a shot from the left alley on Kevin Cooper’s first assist of the day.

The final two goals of the run were separated by just 30 seconds. Kevin Cooper added his second of the game at 5:27 with a big overhand shot from 10 yards out. With 4:59 remaining, Bernhardt scored unassisted to increase the lead to 7-0.

Mount St. Mary’s (0-1) ended its scoring drought late in the half when Andrew Scalley scoring his first of two goals to cut the lead to 7-1.

Gribbin then closed out the quarter with his second of the day with 0:44 to go in the first. That score also kicked off another five-goal run for the Terps.

Kevin Cooper opened the second quarter with his third of the day, tapping in a nice cross-crease feed from Haus. Senior Owen Blye netted his first goal of the season to make it a 10-1 lead with 6:09 to go in the second.

Bernhardt completed his hat trick with a man-up goal off an assist from junior Mike Chanenchuk, while and freshman Bradlee Lord’s first career goal as a Terrapin ended the 5-0 burst.

The Mount went on a two goal run to end the half with goals from Clayton Wainer and Alex Kestler to make it 12-3 heading into halftime.

Maryland got off to a quick start in the second half when sophomore Charlie Raffa won the opening faceoff and scored an unassisted goal in just six seconds.

The Mount answered with two more goals by Scalley and Cody Lehrer to make it 13-5 before the Terps went on a 10 goal run to finish off the Mount St. Mary’s.

The run included the first career goals by junior Quinn Haley, sophomore Bobby Gribbin, who had two, and freshmen Tommy Forsberg and Tyler Brooke. Senior Curtis Holmes and junior Rustin Bryant also added their first goals of the season during this run. Junior Brendan Saylor chipped in two assists during the 10-goal spurt, while sophomore Zach Whooley tallied his first career assist.

Mount St. Mary’s finished off the scoring with a man-up goal by Bryant Schmidt at 3:41 to make the final score 23-6.

The Terps dominated the majority of the statistical categories. Maryland held a 44-18 ground ball advantage and won 25-32 faceoff with Holmes, Raffa, and freshman Andrew Walsh dominating at the faceoff X.

Defensively, Amato made eight saves in the win, while senior Jesse Bernhardt and junior Michael Ehrhardt each had four groundballs. Sophomore Goran Murray had a pair of groundballs and two caused turnovers.
