Lets take a look at how my picks of last weeks top 5 games coincided with reality. We’ll see that some did and some didn’t. Isn’t that how it always goes. We’ll also pick teams and performers of the week. As usual….. here goes.
LAST WEEKS PICKS
My Pick Real result
Notre Dame 31 Nevada 21 Notre Dame 35-0
The Irish looked very good against a respectable Nevada program. If the Irish go into Ann Arbor and rock Michigan next week people will start wearing their ND gear again.
Florida St. 34 Miami 14 Miami 38-34
In a battle of two teams trying to get back to the top, coach Randy Shannon’s Hurricanes did it. If Jacory Harris plays like that all season he’ll be a star.
Oklahoma 52 BYU 31 BYU 14-13
It’s tough to lose the best QB and the best TE in the nation, but nothing should be taken away from BYU’s gutty performance. They put themselves in a position to get more poll respect than Utah did if they go undefeated.
Alabama 24 Virginia Tech 7 Alabama 34-24
The Virginia Tech offense put up way better numbers than I thought they would, but it still wasn’t enough against one of the SEC’s best.
Oklahoma St 34 Georgia 31 Oklahoma St. 24-10
It is impossible to overestimate what this means to the Cowboys and even the Big 12. Oklahoma State has finally beaten a big boy after many close losses.
Ohio St. 27 Navy 14 Ohio St. 31-27
The Midshipman fell just short, but it sue was exciting. QB Ricky Dobbs is a star in the making. Navy fans should enjoy the next two seasons with him at the helm.
California 34 Maryland 21 California 52-13
I thought Maryland would have trouble in the return matchup, I just didn’t figure it would be this bad.
Northwestern 45 Towson 7 Northwestern 47-14
The score was whatever Northwestern wanted it to be.
Johns Hopkins 27 Delaware Valley 24 Del Valley 23-7
I’ll admit I knew little about this game. I went with the local team. It looks like I was wrong.
Best game by a BCS Team: Miami (FL)
In a rivalry game that looked to be heading Florida State’s way in the third quarter, Jacory Harris took over. He led the Hurricanes on drive after drive on the road to gain the victory over Florida State. It was a great game to watch and an important game for the Miami program’s psyche.
Best Game by a non-BCS Team: BYU
This one is easy. BYU got their first top 5 victory in almost 20 years. They got it against a powerful Oklahoma team that they were frustrating even when Bradford was in the game. This victory puts BYU in the drivers seat to be in a BCS game if they can add a victory over Florida State in a couple of weeks.
Best individual performance of the weekend: Tony Pike, QB Cincinnati
The Bearcat QB was a tremendous 27-34 for 362 yards. He also tossed 3 TD’s in the 47-15 victory over a supposedly solid Rutgers defense. He served notice that Cincy isn’t giving up the Big East title easily.
