Azinger makes his Ryder Cup picks today

September 02, 2008 | Drew Forrester

Having not won the Ryder Cup since 1999, the American squad has pulled out ALL the stops this year. Not only did they stagger the “captain’s pick” announcements so that Paul Azinger knows ahead of time who Europe captain Nick Faldo added to his squad, but ‘Zinger gets FOUR picks (as opposed to two for Faldo) in addition to the eight players who made the team via the points system.

Today at 10:00 am, Azinger will make his four picks public knowledge. With Tiger Woods out of the lineup, the captain might go with more veteran choices, but I’m guessing he’s going to pick two young guys and two “vets” (although both veterans I’m picking haven’t played in the Ryder Cup before, making them rookies of sorts…).

My four picks are:

> J.B. Holmes — Long hitter who thinks birdie all the time, he’ll do great in the four-ball (better ball) format. Pair him with a grinder like Jim Furyk and watch him go low.

> Brandt Snedeker — Another one of the young guns on TOUR who can make a bunch of birdies in a hurry. Might be a good fit with Mickelson.

> Woody Austin — He’s the new version of Chris DiMarco. Wears his red, white and blue heart on his sleeve and is both a grinder and a birdie machine. Give him one of the young guys like Anthony Kim or Ben Curtis.

> Steve Stricker — He’s a grinder who many guys consider to be one of the top 5 putters on TOUR. Had some driver issues in the last two events and he’ll need to get rid of the hooks before Valhalla, but I’d take him in a heartbeat. Give him Stewart Cink…
