$101 Winner at Big T on Opening Day; Travers Pick

August 27, 2011 | Gary Quill

On Opening Day of the Timonium State Fair Meet, it didn’t take long for the favorites to fail as $10.60 and $13.00 WIN pay-offs were tallied in the 1st and 2nd races, respectively. Dane Kobiskie started his defense of his trainers title, saddling the even money 3rd favorite, Please Sir ridden by Alberto Delgado.

But it was in the 4th race that the toteboard lit up when 7 lb. “Bug Boy” Ivan Sabol guided 49-1 longshot #1 – Out For A Stroll to a gate-to-wire victory, returning $101.80 to WIN, $15.00 to PLACE and $5.80 to SHOW.

On Saturday at Saratoga Springs, NY the NYRA is hosting their biggest day of horse racing with a number of graded stakes races, with the $1,000,000 Grade 1 Travers Stakes as the main event. A field of 10 will go the classic distance of 1¼ miles led by Preakness winner Shackleford and Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice.

Shackleford (#10) should be able to dictate the pace with #6 – Raison d’Etat, #7 – Coil and #9 – Stay Thirsty intent to be just off his shoulder. The Saratoga main dirt oval has been favoring speed, so I see Shackleford being able to hold off all challengers in deep stretch. Rounding out the exotics look for #1 – Bowman’s Causeway whose been carrying today’s weight (126 lb.) and winning this distance lately, #4 – Ruler On Ice who should move forward from his 3rd place finish in the Gr. 1 Haskell and Bob Baffert’s trainee #7 – Coil, a late blooming 3 year old who showed a lot of grit in winning the Haskell after a bad start.

Recapping Day 1 (Friday 26th) selections at the Timonium State Fair Meet…

Best Bet Empress Lisa  (# 5; 2nd race; 5-2) took the lead shortly after leaving the gate but got press the entire route, held that lead entering the stretch but weakened to finish 4th, 3 lengths behind the winner.

Best Bet pick scorecard from 1 selection at the Timonium Meet: 0 WIN – 0 PLACE – 0 SHOW.

Longshot Riley’s Revenge  (# 5; 6th race; 7-1) took some early money then her odds floated up to near her back Morning Line (8-1) but she was only second best paying  $4.00 for PLACE and $2.80 to SHOW.

Longshot pick scorecard from 1 selection at the Timonium Meet: 0 WIN – 1 PLACE – 0 SHOW

SHOW Parlay Play of the Day$20 on Spinning Lady (#2; 6th race; 4-5) made it look easy going the 4 furlongs sprint parallel to York Road for the first 2. She widened her lead in the short stretch to win by about 6, paying $3.80 $2.60 $2.10. Yeah that’s right, a 5% return on  investment (ROI) on the SHOW parlay wager. Remember the good ol’ days when passbook savings accounts yielded 5%?! I digress… we’ll add the buck ($1) profit to the bankroll and have $21 to “Let It Ride” on Day 2.

SHOW Parlay Play of the Day:  $21 on Eddie C. (4th race; 4-1) ran into some stiff competition at Delaware Park in his first race after a brief layoff. He fits the conditions of this race perfectly (“…have started for any Claiming price in 2010-2011). He has done that just once and won that contest. The sloppy track won’t hurt his chances as he’s won and finished 3rd in 2 career OFF TRACK efforts.

Looks like Day 2 will get in all 9 races before IRENE’s winds blow into State Fair, so enjoy the exciting chase scenes thoroughbred horse racing has to offer. Good Luck!
