Pimlico Selections for Thursday April 23rd & Derby News

April 23, 2009 | Gary Quill

Mother Nature must be a fan of live horse racing at Pimlico because over the past two weeks, the rainy days have been on days when Pimlico was “dark” (aka no live racing) and it appears over the next four days, we’ll be treated to bright sunny skies with temps in the 70’s and 80’s. Life is good at Old Hilltop early in the meet.

Kentucky Derby News…Pioneerof The Nile has a stellar workout at Churchill Downs (CD) proving he can handle a natural dirt surface… jockey Corey Nakatani chooses Square Eddie over Mr. Hot Stuff  for Derby mount… Chocolate Candy labors in his first workout at CD… Looks like Godolphin Stables will enter both Desert Party and Regal Ransom as they name jockeys Alan Garcia and Ramon Dominguez to ride. Giant Oak  will skip Derby allowing Arkansas Derby 3rd place finisher, Summer Bird  to move into final (20th) spot of eligibility based on Graded Stakes Earnings. In case you missed it, jockey Garrett Gomez picked Pioneerof The Nile over Dunkirk as Derby mount. Edgar Prado will ride Dunkirk for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Recapping Day 2 (Sunday 19th) at the Pimlico Spring Meet…

Best Bet Idolizer  (# 7; 6th  race; 4-1) showed early speed without being challenged until entering the stretch but failed to sustain his speed through the final furlong, fading to a 5th place finish.

Longshot Smarty’s Gold  (# 11; 5th race on the turf; 8-1) first try on the turf looked promising as he made a bold, outside move entering the stretch, but had no answer for his challengers as he finished evenly, placing 4th.

SHOW Parlay Play of the Day$52 on Runaway Prize (# 6; 2nd race; 1-2) ran strong in a short field by easily disposing of her opponents, winning by open lengths, returning $3.20 2.40 and 2.10. The SHOW payoff is a poultry 5%, but it keeps the parlay alive. So we added $2.60 to the parlay amount and now have $54 available for the next SHOW parlay wager.

For the Pimlico Spring Meet, Day 3 (Thursday, April 23rd)…

Best Bet:   Strightup Twelve  (# 5; 9th  race; 4-1)Claimed in his last race at this same level by Robert Cole, Jr. who loves Pimlico and aspires every year to be leading owner at the meet, this 5 year old sheds Blinkers and gets Rosie Napravnik in the irons. Trainer Damon Dilodovico has extraordinarily high win percent in 1st Race After Claim (53%), Blinkers Off (40%) and Drops Off Claim (67%) categories.

Longshot:   Her Shadow (# 10; 3rd race on the turf; 20-1)

This one might be a stretch has she takes a huge class jump from $5k to $20k for her first try on the grass, but her GrandDam (Hawkster) was a nice turf runner. So if she can run on the sod, she’ll light up the tote board.

SHOW Parlay available bankroll: $134.60  ($132 bankroll – $52 wager + $54.60 return)

SHOW Parlay Play of the Day:  $54 on Shivaree (# 2; 2nd race; 6-1) is a bold pick with a nice amount at stake, but this 6 year old gelding is the only one in this 10 horse field who can lay off the pace. With or without a fast early pace, he has been in the money in 7 of 11 lifetime starts going today’s (6 furlong) distance.

Let’s hope Day 3 will be another beautiful day to enjoy the exciting chase scenes thoroughbred horse racing has to offer. Good Luck!
