November 02, 2012 | Gary Quill

G1 BC Filly & Mare Sprint – 7 furlongs (Dirt) – $2,000,000 (SA – Race 5; 3:35pm)

#1 – Teddy’s Promise (20-1)
#2 – Belle of the Hall (20-1)
#3 – Dust and Diamonds (9-2)
#4 – Strike the Moon (30-1)
#5 – Rumor (20-1)
#6 – Turbulent Descent (5-1)
#7 – Great Hot (BRZ) (30-1)
#8 – Musical Romance (4-1)
#9 – Groupie Doll (1-1)
#10 – Switch (12-1)

It’s strange that a race with “Sprint” in the title is run at 7 furlongs (FYI – 8 furlongs = 1 mile), which in this industry is often referred to as a “middle distance” race. This distance requires speed and stamina, a special combination possessed by only a minority of thoroughbreds. The most successful ones in here when racing 7 furlongs are #6 – Turbulent Descent has won 4 of 6 going 7 panels, while #8 – Musical Romance winner of this event last year, #9 – Groupie Doll and #10 – Switch each have 3 wins at today’s distance.

Horse to Watch: #3 – Dust and Diamonds appears to be the only runner in here that possesses the ability and/or desire to break from the gate quickly and want the early lead. Without added pressure from her rivals, she might have enough left in the tank in deep stretch to hold off any/all late comers.

Fact: Excuse me while I digress… Maryland voters just don’t get it if they vote NO on Question 7 which will kill the expansion of gambling (to table games). Thus saying, “I’m OK with MD resident gambling dollars continuing to be spent in neighboring states (WV, PA & DE) instead of keeping those dollars in state, which not only will help increase purses for the horse racing industry BUT also help schools”. The latest polls on this Question shows 39% “YES”, 53% “NO” and 7% undecided (aka Clueless).

GQ’s pick: #9 – Groupie Doll, #1 – Teddy’s Promise, #3 – Dust and Diamonds

G1 BC Dirt Mile – 1 mile (Dirt) – $1,000,000 (SA – Race 6; 4:14pm)

#1 – Rail Trip (10-1)
#2 – Delegation (12-1)
#3 – Jersey Town (4-1)
#4 – John Scott (12-1)
#5 – Fed Biz (6-1)
#6 – Shackleford (2-1)
#7 – Emcee (5-2)
#8 – Tapizar (12-1)
#9 – Second City (30-1)

Here’s a race that features a group of a half dozen accomplished 8 furlong runners and 3 who have never tested this distance. The colt getting the most lip service from the so called experts #7 – Emcee who has never travelled beyond 7 furlongs. Go figure.

Horse to Watch: #6- Shackleford is the Morning Line favorite but has never won a race when being more than 1 length behind the leader at any point in the race. This field is loaded with early speed, so it will be interesting to see where jockey Ramon Dominguez places this 2011 Preakness Stakes throughout the contest.

Fact: Since its inception in 2007, the betting favorite has never won (0 for 5).

GQ’s pick: #1 – Rail Trip, #5 – Fed Biz, #7 – Emcee
