People’s Pink Party on Friday at Old Hilltop features 4 legged and 2 legged fillies

May 17, 2012 | Gary Quill

Kudos to The Maryland Jockey Club Racing Secretary, Georganne Hale, for constructing a terrific racing card on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s card has 13 races featuring the $300,000 Grade2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes for 3 year old fillies (race 10).

There are two (2) events on Friday that highlight 2 legged female athletes. The 4th race is the 3rd annual Lady Legends For The Cure race where a field of eight (8) thoroughbreds will be ridden by retired female jockeys. This is part of The Maryland Jockey Club teaming up with Susan G. Komen For The Cure for the day with additional events to raise awareness and money for the fight against breast cancer. Two of the participating jockeys, Patti “PJ” Cooksey and Mary Wiley-Wagner are breast cancer survivors. The other ladies in the irons will be Barbara Jo Rubin (first woman to win a race against men at a recognized track), Cheryl White (first African-American female jockey), Zoe Cadman, Jill Jellison, Jennifer Rowland Small and Mary Russ Tortora.

The third event is the 2nd annual Female Jockey Challenge. Participating female jockeys are Vicky Baze, Forest Boyce, Rosemary Homeister, Greta Kuntzweiler, Rosie Napravnik, Tammi Piermarini and Emma-Jayne Wilson who all have mounts in the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 7th races. The winner of the challenge is determined by the jockey who accumulates the most points in the four (4) designated races using the following scale: 12 points for a 1st place finish (among the challenge riders), 6 points for a 2nd, 4 points for a 3rd and 3 points for a 4th. The Champion will receive $10,000; 2nd Place – $7,000, 3rd Place – $6,000, 4th Place – $4,000, 5th – $2,000, 6th and 7th Place receive $1,000 a piece. Emma-Jayne Wilson won the challenge in 2011 and kindly donated her $10,000 prize money to Komen Maryland.

Pimlico patrons can actually place a WIN and/or EXACTA wager on the Female Jockey Challenge. The pool for this wager closes at Post Time for the 2nd race (approx. 12:30pm).

Another special wager begin offered on Friday is the Pimlico Special – Preakness DOUBLE wager. The Grade3 $300,000 Pimlico Special is race 12 on Friday. So take your best shot at picking the winners in these two races for a potentially handsome payoff.

Recapping selections from Day 27 (Thursday, May 17th) had 6 winners (3 Top Selections) that paid to WIN… $4.80, $18.00, $27.00, $2.80, $6.20 and $3.60) with the $2 Early Double ($66.60); $2 Exactas in the 1st ($13.60), 2nd ($48.80), 6th ($13.60) and 8th ($19.20) races; $1 Trifecta in 1st ($52.50) and 2nd ($45.10) races.

The BEST BET (27 10-8-3) was bet down from 5-1 M/L to 5-2 betting choice but ran a disappointing race, lagging far behind early then only making a mild rally in the stretch to finish 4th.

The LONGSHOT PICK (27 2-2-8) got little support at the windows, going off 18-1, more than double her M/L odds of 8-1, and unfortunately ran to those odds. She displayed early speed for the 5 furlong turf sprint but was challenged early on (which I didn’t count on), held the lead until the 1/8th pole, but slowly faded to finish 7th.
