Big Racing Weekend at Laurel Park; Friday Picks

February 17, 2012 | Gary Quill

Billed as the “Winter Carnival”, Laurel Park has plenty of good thoroughbred racing and attractions for President’s Day weekend.

On the dirt oval, Saturday will feature two handicap division races… the $200,000 G2 Barbara Fritchie Handicap and the $100,000 John B. Campbell Handicap. Monday’s main event is the $200,000 G2 General George and will mark the 4 year old debut of Toby’s Corner. You may remember he won the G1 Wood Memorial last April but injured his left hind leg while training up to the Kentucky Derby and has been on the sidelined since.

Promotion wise, on Saturday fans will be treated to a Rapid Redux poster as Laurel Park honors the consecutive win streak record holder. Also, the first 3,000 regular paid admission fans will receive a knit beanie cap. Those who come to the track on Monday wearing the beanie will be admitted FREE and entered into a contest to win two tickets to this year’s Preakness.

Dale Capuano remains one win shy of 3,000. On Friday’s card he has just one entry, Quiet Screamer, who is the 4-1 Morning Line 3rd choice in race 5.
