Colonial Downs offers plenty of turf races as Maryland Racing takes the Summer off

June 06, 2012 | Gary Quill

The 29 day Pimlico Meet which concluded on Preakness Day (May 19th) seems to be a distant memory even though it’s been just short of three weeks since I’ll Have Another stormed past Bodemeister in the final strides to keep the dream alive of seeing the first Triple Crown winner in 34 years.

That day also marked the final live racing date in the state of Maryland over the next 3 months, until Timonium opens in late August during the Maryland State Fair. No offense to the steeplechase races held at Fair Hill, MD on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, but it’s hard to sell those 8 races as hard-core thoroughbred horse racing fans.

While Maryland racing takes the summer off, Colonial Downs in New Kent, VA opened last weekend for a 32 day meet. Live night racing will be held on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays with first race Post Time 7:00pm EDT. Sundays will feature a daytime racing card with first race post 12:55pm EDT. There are just a few exceptions to this schedule. One being live racing will be conducted on July 4th instead of Thursday July 5th. The meet is highlighted by the Virginia Derby on July 21st.

The best part of this meet is that over 90% of the races will be scheduled to run on the turf. Personally, I love turf races because usually Grass races = Big Prices! Why? One can only assume that many bettors don’t realize that “dirt form” does not translate to “turf form”. Plus, around the northeast where turf races are seasonal, savvy handicappers can find “Hidden Turf Class” among Past Performances showing only dirt races.
