Colonial Downs opens as Maryland Racing Takes the Summer Off

June 07, 2011 | Gary Quill

The 29 day Pimlico Meet which concluded on Preakness Day (May 21st) seems to be a distant memory even though it’s been just short of three weeks since Shackleford ruined horse racing fans dream of seeing the first Triple Crown winner in 33 years.

That day also marked the final live racing date in the state of Maryland for over 3 months until Timonium opens in late August during the Maryland State Fair. No offense to the Memorial Day steeplechase races held at Fair Hill, MD, but it’s hard to sell those 8 races to hard-core thoroughbred horse racing fans.

Colonial Downs

While Maryland racing takes the summer off, Colonial Downs in New Kent, VA opens on Wednesday for a 33 day meet. Live “twilight” racing will be held on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with first race Post Time 5:00pm EDT. Sundays will feature a daytime racing card with first race post 12:55pm EDT.

The best part of this meet is that 80% of the races will be scheduled to run on the turf. Personally, I love turf races because usually Grass races = Big Prices! Why? One can only assume that many bettors don’t realize that “dirt form” does not translate to “turf form”. Plus, around the northeast where turf races are seasonal, savvy handicappers can find “Hidden Turf Class” among Past Performances showing only dirt races.

With that being said, here’s a “bomb” in each turf race to keep an eye on…

1st race: #8 – Success Affirmed (20-1)

2nd race: #12 – Candy For Nico (20-1)

3rd race: #6 – Bo Diddley (10-1)

4th race: #4 – Reine De Bonbon (10-1)

5th race: #7 – Bay Of Wicklow (8-1)

6th race: #8 – Angel I B (20-1) but gotta love #7 – What She Said (7-2)

7th race: use #1 – Under Shirt (15-1), #7 – Snowbuster (30-1), #10 – Touch The Light (20-1) & #14 – We Wish (5-1) with hot favorite #12 – Witor (8-5)

8th race: #7 – Pollard’s Image (20-1)

9th race: a dirt race, ugh… bag it!

BTW – Post Positions for the Belmont Stakes will be drawn at approximately 11:15am on Wednesday. I’ll blog and tweet (@HorseRacingNut) the full field post positions and Morning Line odds soon after the Draw has completed. Saturday’s blog will offer my opinion of the race.

Enjoy your Summer and maybe even plan a trip to Colonial Downs, they have plenty of promotions, check them out.
