Instant Classic Race Calls; Colonial Downs Turf Cup Selections for Saturday Night June 16th

June 16, 2012 | Gary Quill

Over the years the sport of horse racing has been treated to a variety of talented men who make their living as a Race Caller. The Maryland Jockey Club is fortunate to have Dave Rodman, one of the better one’s in the country. The Pablo Picasso of race callers, Dave paints a mental masterpiece for race fans of how the race is developing, far from their sight. Often as runners approach the finish, he’ll toss in a catchy phrase or change his voice tone, as his personal exclamation point in calling the winner.

Since the Maryland thoroughbred racing circuit goes on hiatus during the Summer while Colonial Downs holds their annual meet, Rodman is at the microphone applying his craft at the Virginia track. The other night a 3 year old colt named Beer Is Good rallied in deep stretch, passing 3 rivals in the final 100 yards to win. As the runners neared the finish and Rodman rattled off the 3 tiring foes, desperate to reach the wire just as the winner was passing them, after a brief, dramatic pause in the call, in his best Homer Simpson impersonation, Dave Rodman simply uttered, “Beer Is Good”.

Simple, yet powerful. On the money and entertaining as well. That’s the genius of Dave Rodman.

Another grizzled veteran behind the track microphone is Tom Durkin, who for a number of years called races for the New York Racing Association (NYRA) at Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga as well as Triple Crown races. After a brief retirement, Durkin returned last year and seems to have new found energy, based on this recent race at Belmont Park, won by a horse named Arrrr.

Recapping selections from Friday, June 15th had 8 winners (2 Top Selections) with $2 WIN pay-offs being $3.80 (2nd race), $7.60 (3rd), $6.60 (4th), $18.40 (5th), $5.20 (6th), $5.20 (7th), $14.40 (8th) and $5.00 (9th). The BEST BET of the Day (6 4-0-0) was rushed out to the lead right from the gate and played “catch me if you can”, and they couldn’t catch the 8-5 2nd choice who returned $5.20 to WIN, $2.80 to PLACE and $2.10 for the SHOW. The LONGSHOT PICK (6 0-1-2) showed no interest throughout the 1 mile contest and never ran on late as anticipated @ 7-1.
