The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Waiting; Colonial Downs Selections for Thursday Night June 21st

June 20, 2012 | Gary Quill

Folks who get involved in the sport of horse racing as an owner primarily do it to taste victory, not in hopes of making a sound investment. Horse racing isn’t referred to as “The Sport of Kings” because any Average Joe can afford the expenses that go along with owning a thoroughbred race horse.

Regardless if an owner is just one of dozens in a syndicate or a wealthy businessman, the ultimate thrill is seeing your horse win and getting to the Winners’ Circle. It doesn’t have to be the Kentucky Derby. A win is a win, and the level of excitement is the same whether it be a graded stakes race or a $5,000 claiming race.

So just imagine the agony every owner feels after each race in which their horse does not win. Only to look to the horses next start in hopes of a victory. Now imagine if that first victory never happens. At what point does an owner give up and put his winless runner out to pasture?

Probably the most famous career maiden is Zippy Chippy (above) who went 0 for 100 in his career. Tonight at Colonial Downs, the 8th race is a $25,000 Maiden Claiming event. In the field #6 – Primero Peru, is a 7 year old who is winless in 65 career starts. As crazy as it may sound, I believe he’s got a shot at getting that elusive first career victory and giving his owners the thrill of having their picture taken with him in the Winners Circle. Hey, it could happen!

Recapping selections from Sunday, June 17th had 6 winners (4 Top Selections) with $2 WIN pay-offs being $8.60 (1st race), $6.00 (2nd), $18.40 (3rd), $8.40 (4th), $4.40 (5th) and $6.40 (9th). The BEST BET of the Day (8 5-0-0) was rank early, made a late run but failed to even hit the board, getting nosed out for 3rd as the 3-1 2nd betting choice. The LONGSHOT PICK (7 0-1-2) was scratched. Due to Father’s Day, I was unavailable to make adjustments to selections after scratches were announced.
