1st Leg of Canadian Triple Crown (The Queen’s Plate) and Colonial Downs Selections for Sunday June 24th

June 24, 2012 | Gary Quill

It’s going to be a beautiful summer Sunday of horse racing. On a somewhat local level at Colonial Downs in VA (well the majority jockeys and trainers are MD based) there are nine (9) turf races scheduled. North of the border, in Toronto Canada at Woodbine race course is the Canadian version of America’s Kentucky Derby, the Queen’s Plate Stakes.

The Plate is the 10th race (post time 5:36pm EDT) on a blockbuster 12-race card, which includes five (5) other stakes. Post time for the 1st race is 12:00pm EDT. TVG will broadcast live from Woodbine throughout the day. My pick is #7 – Golden Ridge (6-1).

The Plate is the first leg of the unique Canadian Triple Crown contested at 1¼ miles. The $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes is 1 3/16 miles on the dirt at Fort Erie on July 15th. The $500,000 Breeders’ Stakes is run on August 5th at Woodbine 1½ miles on the turf.

Recapping selections from Saturday, June 23rd had 7 winners (5 Top Selections; payoffs in BOLD) having $2 WIN pay-offs being $8.00 (2nd race), $7.60 (3rd), $11.00 (4th), $4.80 (5th), $5.20 (6th), $18.00 (7th) and $5.20 (9th). The BEST BET of the Day (11 5-1-0) was game but could not catch the winner, settling for second returning $3.20 to PLACE and $2.40 for the SHOW. The LONGSHOT PICK (10 0-2-3) was bet down to half of her M/l (from 15-1 to 7-1), showed promise early stalking the pace but faded in the stretch to be OTB.
